To set myself apart from the rest I work harder than everyone else. Whether it is in the weight room or on the field I always give my full effort. To be good you need to work as hard as everyone else but to be great you need to take that extra step and work harder. Being mediocre gets you mediocre places, I want to be in great places doing GREAT things. My self control comes from within. I never take anyone's opinions about me or my team to heart because they don’t understand the work we put in. People don’t see the extra hours in the weight room. I use their negative opinion as motivation to prove them wrong and be the best I can be. When you let people's opinion about you get to your head you will have a hard time going anywhere, both on the field and in life. You have to be confident in yourself and that confidence comes from knowing that you give your 100% in everything you do. When I have a bad play, or let a guy slip past me itś alway a motivator to get better the next play and not let it happen again. I may get mad, but I take that frustration and turn it into something positive for myself and my team. Someone else's opinion should not dictate whether or not you are good at what you do or not, being confident is what should dictate that. When you give your full effort, the pieces will fall into place themselves.
We have a motto at NCHS- Full Nelson. What is that you ask? FULL 100% EFFORT: I want to be remembered not for my athletic ability but for always being the hardest worker and never giving up. Your athletic ability can only take you so far, but hard work will take you so much farther-not only on the field but in life. Football, wrestling, and track and field end one day; no matter how much we dread it, one day our days of playing will be over. But working hard will set you up to have a successful life. FULL LOVE FOR YOUR SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY: It is very important to me to give back to my school and community. I try to support not only my teammates; but also I lead the Pep Club during basketball season, I am head coach of the powder puff football team, help to coach track and field Special Olympics, and also volunteer in the FMD room. I am an ambassador of RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) of Bardstown and a member of BETA and provide over 100 community service hours a year. FULL OF LOVE FOR YOUR TEAMMATES: My teammates are not only my friends but my family. We are there to bring each other up, get the best out of each other by pushing each other on the field, weight room and in the classroom. FULL ACCOUNTABILITY: You are accountable for your actions on and off the field. I know that I am representing FULL Nelson football, wrestling and track and field not only every time I step foot on that field, but by my actions in the classroom, school, and community. I hope when my coaches think of Carson Mattingly they say I am FULL NELSON.
I have always been driven to be a leader off and on the field. As a 12 year old I became the Beta National Chaplain and gave inspirational speeches around the country. My message was simple, look at yourself and be the change. I will be the hardest worker in anything I do, and I will lead others to be the same way. One way that I lead and be that change on my team is by example. A leader does not mean that you are bossy. It means that you show your teammates what it means to be a good teammate, what it means to be the first on the field and the last to leave, it means no matter if we win or lose I will do what I need to do to get better for my team. When I was an 8th grader I had a decision to make, to go to a school that had a stacked team, or to go to my home school that had not won in two years. I decided I wanted to be that leader and to make a change. It took two years, but in my junior year we won three games. It took hard work, grit, and determination. I always strive to be the best I can be and I don’t need anything to be motivated. My motivation comes from the will to be better than I was yesterday. I will always look at myself to be the change.
