My dad has told me over the years, “Son, you can only do what you can do. Don’t try and bite off more than you can chew.” I heeded these words as much as I could- which wasn’t much at all- and so now my life is greatly varied. Between football, lifting, school, NHS, speech and debate, and a new found love for theatre; I’ve found that clicks are a mere cliche of the past and that you can do whatever you want, no matter who you associate with or where you come from. On the field; I say little and hit more, in the classroom; I say little and listen more, and on the stage; I hit less and talk more. The more I do, the more I can appreciate what I’m gifted at and discover what I can do better. I see college as a place where I can appreciate and discover more. It’s where I can make a map for my life and gain new camaraderie among those who enjoy the same things that I do. I enjoy football. It’s therapeutic for me. It helps keep me at a balance, balance being a rarity as of late; but when I step on the field, it all begins to make sense. Life begins to reach an equilibrium. That’s why, moving forward into a collegiate level of this sport, would be beneficial to me. It’ll help me focus my stress into forming a competitive edge. I’m a person that holds myself to high standards and sometimes it can be my own poison. I’m my worst critic, but it makes me who I am. It’s what makes me a competitor, and it’s also what makes me Ethan Scott. Everyday I wake up the same way. I have a goal in mind and I do my very best to accomplish it.
I came into my school’s football program after a state championship my Freshman year. I had played when I was younger, but I had some academic priorities then that I no longer have now. I was a young lineman -rusty from a few years of inactivity- who got dominated in practice for the first few months, but I learned. I picked it up and tried to push myself to improve every rep and was persistent. The team that year was lacking to say the least; not in talent, but in maturity and effort. That year has taught me a lot. It’s given me experience. Later that year, I got playing time with some of those seniors as a first year. That meant a lot and showed me I had potential. I’m still working and plan to in the coming years. I plan to be a collegiate athlete.
