Personal Statement

I am currently a senior at Lincoln North Star High School in Lincoln, NE. I have a 3.7 GPA, carry a schedule primarily full of honors and AP classes, and have been on the Honor Roll every semester. I am 6’ and 240 lbs. I play center, guard, and long snapper. I am the starting center and long snapper for the varsity team. I started as the varsity center or guard and long snapper as a junior and was the starting long snapper as a sophomore.

I would describe myself as a team player who is very hard working, coachable, and has a positive attitude. I am a leader both on the field and in the classroom. I put forth maximum effort during the season and in the off-season to become the best possible football player I can be. I thrive in a team environment where we push each other to our fullest potential, support each other through highs and lows, and develop lasting friendships.

I am looking for a college that will assist me in reaching my academic/professional goals while giving me the opportunity to play football and continue to be part of a team environment. My academic interests are in history, secondary teaching, and coaching. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss becoming a productive member of your football program and the academic offerings your school has to assist me in reaching my professional goals.

  • Named one of the Top 2018 Long Snappers at the camp. Derek received the 2nd highest RSI (speed/accuracy) score among 2018 snappers and the 4th highest among all snappers. Derek made the finals for snapping accuracy competition. Comments included in the Camp recap blog: Derek Hahn out of Nebraska continues to improve greatly. He did really well in IL and made it all the way to the finals. He was only a couple of inches away from going very far into the finals brackets. Great attitude and always getting better. Link to camp video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tGvvn5kPKI. Official Camp Review by Chris Rubio: Hahn was on fire at the Rubio Long Snapping IL Summer Camp on July 15th, 2017. His ball is very tight right now and he had some good speed on it throughout the day. Form is very solid and you can tell he has really been working hard and smart. Really like how quick Hahn's hands have gotten over the past couple of months. Really good job of improving since VEGAS 30. Love to see Hahn focus on increasing his athleticism and really believing in himself. I KNOW he can snap at the next level and I want Hahn to know it as well and snap as such. Great kid. Massive jump in the rankings and well deserved. Derek did well at the Rubio Long Snapping VEGAS 30 Event on May 13-14, 2017. Very smooth Long Snapper that is improving daily. Love to see him focus on not over rotating the ball before the snap so he doesn't fidget and also learn to lead with his elbows. Leading with his elbows will create more whip and give him more overall speed on the ball. Increasing his athleticism and lowering his center of gravity will help a ton in moving up the rankings. Very good attitude and he will make a college coach happy in the next couple of years.

  • Named one of the Top 2018 Long Snappers at the Camp. Comments included in the Camp Recap blog: Derek Hahn was one of the more accurate and all around consistent snappers at the camp. He has tremendous form and the work he’s put in privately with Rubio Long Snapping instructor Gabe Miller really showed. Link to camp video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ez4BCCNYnrQ&feature=youtu.be. Official Player Review by Chris Rubio: Derek showed a lot of improvement at the Rubio Long Snapping Camp in AZ on April 9 2017. His accuracy and his form both looked very strong and the next step for him will be combining that with his speed. Once he fully trusts his technique he’ll see his game step up to the next level. Looking forward to seeing him snap with the same level of confidence at VEGAS 30 as he did in Arizona.
  • Camp/Event
  • Rubio Long Snapping Vegas XXIX Camp
  • 1/14/17 to 1/15/17
  • Player Review by Chris Rubio: Derek did well at the Rubio Long Snapping VEGAS XXIX Event on January 14-15, 2017. He is a thick and powerful Long Snapper with good overall form that uses his body well throughout the process. Love to see him make sure he is not adjusting his right hand prior to the snap as that will impact his ball (spiral). Also, working on his athleticism and controlling his body more will push him way up the rankings. He can definitely snap a nice, smooth ball and could move into the final at VEGAS 30 by increasing his speed which will push up his RSI. Great attitude and listens well.
  • Camp/Event
  • Rubio Long Snapping Underclassmen “Invite Only” Event
  • 7/21/16 to 7/22/16
  • This was an invite only camp with athletes chosen by Chris Rubio. Ranking after this camp: #75 out of 231. Player Review by Chris Rubio: Really like the direction Derek is headed after I saw him at the Underclassmen Invitational. He was snapping with a lot of confidence and starting to really let the ball fly out of his hands. Locking down his spiral will be a key in moving up the rankings. By VEGAS XXIX, I would be willing to bet he will be sub .8 at all times if he keeps up this pace. At Vegas, I will be checking spiral, speed AND, here's a big one, athleticism. HARD WORKER!
  • Camp/Event
  • Rubio Long Snapping Camp
  • 7/09/16 to 7/09/16
  • Player Review by Chris Rubio: Derek continues to improve and he did well at the Rubio Long Snapping summer camp in IL on July 9th, 2016. Overall very strong Long Snapper with powerful hands that has good form. Need to see him fully lockdown his spiral and make sure he uses all of his lower half on every single snap. Legs are just a tad slow compared to his hands and that will adjust the speed of the ball at the end of the snap. Speeding up his legs will create more pop and speed. Very good attitude and always improving. Solid jump in the rankings. Moves up every single time.

  • Rubio Vegas XXVII Camp
  • 1/15/16 to 1/17/16
  • Player Review by Chris Rubio: Derek did well at the Rubio Long Snapping VEGAS XXVII Event on January 21-22, 2016. He is built thick and he has powerful hand. Starting form is very good and he has solid balance. Love to see him focus on eliminating the hitch and speeding up his hands at the start. This will greatly increase the overall speed of the ball. Slow motion drills to lock down the consistency of his snapping motion will help with accuracy. He will be as good as he chooses to be. VERY good attitude.

  • Player Review by Chris Rubio: Derek had a good day at the Rubio Long Snapping spring camp in IL. He is big for his age and has good balance. Overall form is very good and I like his attitude. Follows through well. Need to see him focus on locking out his legs and making sure his spiral is perfect. Accurate and consistent Long Snapper.
