False Expectations Appearing Real or FEAR is one of the biggest dream crushers known to man by making a person scared and or too cautious to act.All humans are different in the aspect of letting fear get in the way of their desires, or they can take control and conquer said fear with the power of their minds.
As a sophomore making the transition from freshman to varsity football at first was scary. Once summer workouts began I had one main goal and that was to be a starter on the varsity team. I wanted to play defense on Friday nights in front of huge crowds, but I had become filled with fear. I had fears roaming my mind about missings a play I needed to make, getting injured, not understanding the defensive concepts, or not getting my chance in a senior lead program as a sophomore. Right before three-a-days started, I got hurt, which was exactly what I feared. Returning back to action, I played a lot on the scout team to give the varsity a look. I knew I needed to prove myself, but I let fear beat me once again. I had a decision to make which was allow fear to consume my sophomore season or beat fear and obtain my goal. I made the choice of going out and beating fear which brought things out of me I didn’t know were there, like a killer competitive spirit and a bright personality. Though I’m not shy, I didn’t always show my true colors mainly because I was fearful of the opinions of others. Challenging fear in the competitive area of my life also made me challenge it in the social aspect of things. I took action first by talking and becoming better friends with the seniors who I was scared to talk. I was worried about whether or not they would like me. However, I realized the thoughts of people aren’t nearly as relevant as my own. I had become less mute, started being myself; a colorful kid, dancing, screaming and shouting all the time. By week 10 of the regular season, I had become more than the second string cornerback. I had become the starter and played a great game. That game led to me starting for the rest of the season as well as the playoffs. I learned not to fear, use my mind to get ahead and be persistent when things aren’t going my way. False Expectations Appearing Real almost cost me a great season and great friends. The power of the mind is incredible. What a person is made of doesn’t matter, but what does, is his will and mental strength to achieve.
