To Whom this MOST concerns,
My name is Brooks Jenkins and I WANT TO PLAY COLLEGE FOOTBALL! My story is simple I have played football for nearly 10 years and have become pretty good at it. I desire to use my football skills to get a college education and to continue playing the game I love. My long term goals include teaching and coaching among others. To do this I need a degree and expanded experience in the game.
About my skills: Physically I'm a late bloomer. I was never left back so I won't turn 17 until August but over the last year I've put on over 40 lbs and grown about 2 1/2 inches. I am a verifiable 6'2 1/2" and 240 lbs (recorded at U of Kentucky, Louisville, Ohio St, U of Cincinnati, and U of South Carolina invitational recruiting camps). My 40 is not exceptional (5.1 - 5.3) but I'm confident I can improve it. My shuttle and similar times will be provided ASAP, I just need to get them from my head Coach.
I just returned from an 8 camp recruiting tour of the Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and South Carolina. My drill times pushed me into the 1st groups at U of Kentucky, Louisville, and Ohio St among others, where I graded out top ten. These groups were made up of mostly big time recruits who I either out performed in one or ones or showed I could hang with. Most were bigger than me but my quickness and superior technique showed itself and I performed well.
I have played O-line for my entire life and I am returning to play some defensive end this year after a strong showing in spring ball. I have played center almost my entire life and believe it is my best position due to my height and weight but many recruiters and scouts at these camps asked to see me at tackle due to my footwork and technique. I have a clean consistent shotgun snap and my father is an o-line coach, which means I have watched more film then most players would care to at my age. This allows me to read defensive schemes and make appropriate line calls pretty easily.
So my main deficit is my weight which has been consistently on the rise between lifting, proper diet, and of course natural growth. I'm looking to play this season at a solid 255 and don't think I'll have any problem getting to 270 or so by spring much less by next summer’s 2 a days. I know that I have a lot to offer many teams especially DIAA, DII, or DIII. I'm a realist and understand that at this present time I don't meet the BIG BOY standards of many major schools but that's OK. I want to go to a University where MY skills are appreciated. I want go where I can play and not be buried forever in a monstrous depth chart where my chances of proving myself are limited due to first team snap counts. Don’t get me wrong I believe I can prove myself ANYWHERE but I’m a realist. Oklahoma and Auburn love the idea of the kid coming out at 305. Hell, I’ll be a 275 lb freshman CENTER. Who says I can’t be 300 plus lbs my sophomore or junior season. I just need a little time to gain some strength and weight. So a smaller school is probably my best option. From there I can earn a MEANINGFUL degree, enjoy my college / football experience, and possibly move onto a teaching and coaching career.
I started every snap last year as a 6’ 185 lb center and held my own against superiorly sized athletes so my toughness isn’t an issue. I don’t have much meaningful film from last year but my coach will provide film from late summer scrimmages and early games this upcoming season to show you the player I have become.
My grades have been consistently good for the last two years. My GPA for the last 2 years has been about a 3.2 to a 3.8 per semester after a rocky freshman year. I have only taken the SAT’s once so far and scored a Reading 480, Math 540, Writing 490 only average but I’m taking 2 SAT courses this summer and hope to add a hundred plus points per score. I’m going to retest this fall and also take the ACT. Also I come from a strong family where my parents have been married for close to 20 years….I’m not a flake or troublemaker. My father is a high school coach so I understand what it takes on and off the field when it comes to football.
So basically it comes down to this. I’m a slightly undersized lineman who is now only coming into his own as a senior. I am developing the size and strength to compete at any level but already have the technique, brains, and heart to do what you need. My grades and family support will allow me to succeed anywhere academically. I believe I am worthy of a scholarship to any team who sees MY WORTH to them.
Thanks
