Personal Statement

I feel fortunate to have been a multisport athlete until Winter of my Sophomore year in high school.  I realize that I began specializing in basketball later than many of my peers, but I believe this has ultimately shaped me into an athlete with a unique skill set on the basketball court.  Playing setter on the top boys club volleyball team in my state taught me how to process information quickly and to make great decisions with the ball.  It also taught me how to be a leader on the floor.

Although I'm still young, I feel like I’ve developed several traits that make me a good leader on and off the court. For example, I’ve learned that being a leader requires being vocal to teammates but also leading by example. I think it is very important to be able to direct traffic with your voice but also be able to motivate people to work by working hard all the time. Off the court I have also realized that athletes are looked up to as role models for many people. This means we are held to a higher standard which has taught me to always be thinking about how my actions affect the people around me. My high school coaches always tell us that player led teams do better than teams that look to the coaches to lead them. Even though my first varsity season didn’t end as well is I would’ve liked, I am very much looking forward to becoming that kind of leader on my high school team over the next 2 years.

Since I was little, sports have played a very big role in my life, but my parents have helped me to realize that no one cares how good you are at anything if you also don’t have great character.  In life, I look forward to keep developing athletically but also as a person. I've always thought that it's funny to watch all of the parents yelling at their kids during third grade basketball games that in reality don't matter. Watching this seems to put into perspective that although I take basketball seriously, it is just a game at the end of the day, and I need to enjoy it while it lasts. My goal is to play at the highest level that I can but I also think it is important to be enjoying the process wherever I end up going.

NCSA COLLEGE RECRUITING®

NCSA College Recruiting® (NCSA) is the nation’s leading collegiate recruiting source for more than 500,000 student-athletes and 42,000 college coaches. By taking advantage of this extensive network, more than 92 percent of NCSA verified athletes play at the college level. The network is available to high school student-athletes around the country through valued relationships with the NFLPA, FBU, NFCA and SPIRE. Each year, NCSA educates over 4 million athletes and their parents about the recruiting process through resources on its website, presentations of the critically-acclaimed seminar College Recruiting Simplified, and with Athletes Wanted, the book written by NCSA founder Chris Krause.
