I grew up with the game of basketball. Since I can remember, I have played with my friends, on a team, or honed my skills individually. As soon as I could walk, there were pictures of me with a basketball in my hands. My mom put up a small hoop in the backyard of our home so we could spend time shooting and passing together. She was my first coach and will always be my biggest inspiration. In elementary school, my best friend and I dreamed about making the NBA and becoming the greatest big man - shooting guard duo in the game. We would constantly challenge people faster, stronger, and taller than us, until we came out on top. And as I grew, so did my aspirations.
My primary focus entering high school was to make the Varsity Basketball team and succeed beyond the classroom. I maintained a 4.25 GPA in my freshman and sophomore years and was looking forward to representing my school. Unfortunately, I faced setbacks during the pandemic and chose to focus on my education, mental health, and family before athletics.
In my Junior year, I made the team and was named captain. I didn't have the season I had hoped for but made it my commitment to approach every game with a positive attitude, knowing it was a privilege to step on the court for every game. Towards the end of the season, I began feeling more confident about my performances, knowing I was putting in quality minutes and improving myself with every game. My abilities as a leader and motivator helped not only myself, but my team improve their work ethic, academic diligence, and communication we displayed throughout the season.
Going into my Senior year, my goal is to strengthen my body, and captain's mentality. Whatever challenge is placed in front of me, I know my life experiences, family, and attitude give me the means to overcome it. I am grateful for every coach, teammate, and opponent that has pushed me to become a better person. They have all helped me understand that with hard work and dedication, achieving my dreams is possible.
