Personal Statement

My name is Karim Mekkoudi. I come from a multi-cultural family that has taught me how hard work and determination can get you where you want to be. My father came from Morocco not even speaking English, and built himself into a strong businessman. His example showed me that if you want something you just have to work hard enough. My love of basketball started when I was just two years old with a plastic “Little Tykes” hoop.  I participated in just about every other sport all of my childhood, but it wasn’t until I reached Middle School that I re-ignited the spark that I had for basketball. I was finally part of a team This showed me how to work together to build better relationships, and how communication is key to success. Freshman year of high school our team dominated, we were undefeated and forged strong friendships. Sophomore year I was asked to join Varsity. This was a lesson in patience for me, learning how to work hard even if you don’t get on the court. Junior year I was again on Varsity, this time as a starter. My coach taught me important basketball skills that are helpful in life as well, and an overall knowledge of the game that gave me a greater appreciation for it. I have continually participated in any basketball experience I can (AAU, travel teams, and showcases), to continue to improve on my skills and abilities. This past year with Covid-19 has been a huge learning experience. Our AAU tournaments were put on hold because of the pandemic, and we are still not sure if we’ll have a season this year.  I have continued to train daily, and push myself both with studying to increase my knowledge of the game, as well as keeping in peak physical condition. I hope to use my love of the game to help me get into college. I would love to play professionally, and also to have the opportunity to educate myself, and be able to not only be able to support myself, but to live a full, and happy life, hopefully while playing basketball.
