In many ways, I think basketball saved my life. For me it was the one thing I excelled at and the only thing that brought me comfort. Basketball gave me breath when I was drowning in my sorrows. My state of mind not only affected my motivation and academics, due to my condition of having bipolar disorder, I felt like giving up. In high school, basketball season was the best time of year not only mentally but physically. During basketball season I was excited to go to school, I became motivated to get work done to play and I was healthier because it was the most important thing to me. Playing on the court with a team of others who understand the dedication and share the passion of playing increased my love for the game. Rather than isolate myself, I put myself on a court and turned all my anger into skill. There was never a day where my mom did not support my basketball goals and dreams. She showed up to every single game and gave me every opportunity to be able to play, and she is the reason I keep pushing due to the fact that I want a better life for her. I am forever grateful for the chances I have been given. Playing basketball turned my life around and continues to give me hope for my future.
