Personal Statement

I am athletically minded.  My parents had enrolled me in sports since I was three.  I played baseball for years.  I also played soccer since I was in Elementary school.  However, when I discovered basketball I didn't seem to have an interest in the other sports like I used to.  My first exposure was the summer going into eighth grade.  I played on an AAU team during the summer.  I think what drew me into the sport is its fast pace of play.   Although I was on the court a lot probably due to my athleticism and speed, I did not make many shots.  I was behind my peers in this arena due to the fact I never shot hoops growing up.  However, it didn't stop me from getting into the game.  I capitalized on my strengths- speed and the ability to read the court and pass the ball to my teammates who had experience shooting.  My coach, Coach Chris, called me a play maker that summer.  It wasn't until high school that I gave up the other sports and focused on basketball.  So I am a late bloomer to the sport and I feel as though I have yet to peek with my abilities.  This past year I have definitely increased my ability to shoot from the free throw line.  I now make a lot more than I miss.  I have also been developing my abilities and consistency to shoot the ball and score.  My work ethic is strong.  I am always the first one to get to practice and the last one to leave.  I'm passionate about the game, I play with heart and I want to win.   I am a team player; I know not one player can win the game.  Furthermore, I am not intimidated by better players, they just make me want to play harder and be better myself.   My goal is to continue developing my skills,  being part of a team and playing the game that I enjoy the most while getting an education.

My collegiate goals are to graduate college and become a therapist.  I want to work with the  school age kids  and help them develop coping skills to deal with today's issues and struggles that they are faced with.  I also want  to  increase our society's awareness of anxiety and depression of our youthful population and connect with parents to develop their skills on how to deal with their child having these issues.  It has been a personal struggle for me so I can relate to those who have experienced this same thing.  Sports have helped me cope, regroup and overcome the obstacles I have faced.  Without sports, I'm not sure where I would be.
