My name is Trenton Grissom. I am a senior at Halo Academy located near Athens Georgia. My love for basketball began when I was around 4 years old. I would watch NBA games on TV with my older brother and mother in awe over the players moves, their talent and the competitiveness of the game. I would go out in my garage and practice over and over on my little adjustable goal every move, dunk, basket etc. until (on a much smaller scale) I perfected what I saw on the TV.
Today not much has changed with the exception that instead of my garage, I am on any court I can find playing, learning, putting in the work to become a better player, teammate and ultimately the top of my league. To some that may sound presumptuous to build a for me it is what I strive for every day on and off the court. I take playing basketball very seriously because of my overall love for the game. For many players what makes them a good player is measured by the points they score or the crazy dunks they make. Do not get me wrong these are great skills, and I too push myself in these areas, but it wasn't until I began to develop my IQ for the game that my love of the game really grew. I admire the ingenuity basketball requires. Almost like playing a very fast paced game of chess, basketball requires as much mental acuity as it requires physical ability. Possessing the instinct ability to analyze my opponent's habits, predict his moves so I can build my plan of action to control the situation as well as understanding my opponent is trying to read me but not be predictable. I truly enjoy how basketball challenges me on all levels every time I step on the court. I am a work horse and believe that to be better you must want better and therefore must work harder. I am willing to put in the hard work so ultimately, I can play at the highest level. I am very coachable and do what is required of me to achieve the goals I have set for myself and those of my coaches and my teammates. I will take the advice of my peers and coaches and use it to develop my skills utilizing their guidance as an opportunity to improve and grow as a player and team member. I strongly believe in TEAMWORK, and that teamwork wins games, but that teamwork takes trust in each other. I am trustworthy and will demonstrate to my teammates that I am dependable, and they can count on me to put in the work and to show up for my team on the court and from the bench. I understand to get to the top you must start at the bottom and WORK your way up. To some that may be discouraging, to me that is motiving.
I have many moments in basketball that I am very proud of from being named captain of my varsity team, all- region player, all- conference player, and all- time highest scorer. However, as a player I am most proud that out of the times I was told no, or didn't make the spot on the team I wanted, or my team lost the play-offs that it did not discourage me or break my spirit or love of the game but made me more determined to be a better player.
I know I am one of thousands of other talented young players looking for the opportunity to play at the next level. I am prepared to put in the extra work and dedication to prove to my coach he made the right choice by selecting me to play on his team.
