I started playing basketball in a church league when I was 6 years old. I progressed from church ball to to travel ball and then, landed on an elite team. Up to that point, I had been accustomed to being a starter and one of the tallest, most athletic, and valued players on the team. This year was different. These players were taller, stronger, faster and flat out better. I was barely seeing any significant minutes on the court.
So, I went to work. I did extra training, played in pick up games, practiced my shot and worked on my fundamentals. By the end of that season, I wasn’t starting but, the coaches had more confidence in my ability and I was getting in the game, making my presence known and making a significant contribution to the team.
Although this is cliche, I learned the value of hard work. I learned to it’s not good enough to be the best in a bubble. I learned to be dedicated and laser focused on achieving my goals. I learned that I am a great athlete but there are always things I can work on and do better. I know I have what it takes to compete, to be a great leader and teammate and to make a positive impact on your basketball team.
