Personal Statement

As a senior with the most varsity experience on my team, I plan to lead my team as far as possible this coming season. The past three years of my high school career have been great. I have started varsity every year since I was a freshman. This has given me a lot of time on the floor, and the experience that it takes to not only excel on the court, but to lead my team to accomplish great things. I led my team in rebounds by a great margin this past year, finishing the season with 205 rebounds in 20 games. Through the season, I shot exactly at 50%, with 103 out of 206 field goals made, and shot 70% from the free throw line at 48 out of 69. The KHSAA stat leaders require a 22 game minimum to be listed as a top 50 player. As a team, we played 22 games, but I was ruled out due to a concussion for two of those games. I would be listed as around number 20 in the state in rebounding if I played 22 games. During my senior season, I plan to reach top 50 in the state not only rebounding, but also for scoring. I love to compete at the highest level possible, and to do that I have to push myself to get better every day. I work out six days of the week, working on my strength, endurance, vertical, shooting, ball handling, and foot speed. I will bring intensity to the game no matter the competition, and play to my full potential. Aside from playing basketball, my academics are also thriving as I have taken advanced placement classes and honors, and I also plan on taking college classes this year and have a 4.03 weighted Grade Point Average. This is my second summer working on my own. Before last summer, I worked for someone else's mowing company. I purchased different kinds of equipment so I can mow and weed-eat yards, cemeteries, etc., myself for people which is hard, yet very rewarding with jobs lasting anywhere from 30 minutes to six hours.  My work ethic has gotten me a long way so far, and I know that it is what will make me successful on and off the court.

  • Camp/Event
  • PGC Basketball Scoring College
  • 7/22/19 to 7/26/19
  • I stayed at Maryville College dorm room July 22 - 26. This was the first camp I was asked to bring a notebook to. PGC (Point Guard Camp) Basketball is more than a camp for basketball it is a week of learning the game of basketball. I have read the notes I took already and have written down actions to share with my high school coach. I took at least 14 pages of notes and have talked to my high school coach about some of the information I learned at PGC Scoring College. I believe my high school team can incorporate some of the actions in our season this year, 2019-2020, to improve our game. Our Director Abraham Gilbert lead the Scoring College. Every day we began with breakfast at 7:45, Classroom & Gym at 8:45, Lunch at 12:15, Gym and Recovery at 1:30, Dinner at 5:15, Classroom and Gym at 6:45, and we ended our day at 10:00. My coach was Cody, originally from Lewis County. Parents were not invited to attend on a daily basis but were invited to attend parent night and closing ceremonies. During closing ceremonies I was recognized for my foul shooting. I was chosen by my team coach as a leader for the Champion of Champion Games. Although our team didn't win, I learned the process of planning plays to run, what to do in different defensive situations, what kinds of pick and rolls to run, and how to guard a pick and roll. When I was introduced as a team leader, Abraham Gilbert introduced me as the strongest and purest shooter at the college. I believe this Scoring College helped me understand the different kinds of players on the basketball court, as well as many different aspects of the game. The Scoring College not only taught me about the game of basketball but also about life, the struggle, the work, and the gratitude that everyone should have toward others. Abraham Gilbert told the story of Nelson Mandela and his struggle during his imprisonment but how he kept a good attitude, read the poem Invictus daily, and the work that he did for society after his release. I remember the story of the carrot, egg, and coffee bean. The carrot when put in hot water turns to mush, the egg becomes hard, but the coffee bean when put in hot water flavors all that is around him. I will be the coffee bean.
  • Camp/Event
  • Kentucky Christian College - Hoop Lyfe Camps - Men's Elite Camp
  • 7/13/19 to 7/13/19
  • The first section of the camp was tough conditioning that required the participants to be in shape at a high level. The next section of the camp was dribbling drills. The last section of the camp allowed participants to put the skills to use in game situations. The dribbling section of the camp helped me improve my dribbling skills as a player.
  • Camp/Event
  • Rick Bolus High Potential "Blue Chip" Camp
  • 6/25/19 to 6/29/19
  • I stayed in a Georgetown College Dorm room June 25 - 29, 2019. I was placed on Team 2 Arizona White with Coach Matthew Taylor. Each day was scheduled beginning with Free Play from noon to five on the first day. All days were scheduled with: team practices, contests, stations, speakers for the participants to listen to and learn different aspects of life and play, and mini clinics from 8:30 AM, (breakfast prior to) to about 10:00PM or later each night. The camp concluded with an awards ceremony, all star games, and a single elimination tournament. Contests I won included: Around the World, Cut Throat, and a Knock out Contests. I won t-shirts for these contests. My High Potential "Blue-Chip" Basketball Camp Evaluation was as follows with 4 being excellent and 1 being area for improvement: Attitude - 4; Defense off-the-ball - 4; Dribbling - 1; Defense on-the-ball - 3; Intensity - 3; Passing - 1; Team Play - 3; Rebounding - 3; Outside shooting - 3; Inside shooting or penetration - 1. Additional comments on my evaluation: I LOVE Your game! Glad I got you! Work on What I told you and you'll be a star! Get there! I believe in you! This camp helped me better understand what it takes to lead a team.

  • Asbury June Elite Camp
  • 6/15/19 to 6/15/19
  • "The Asbury Camp helped me realize how good competition at high school level can be, but also made me realize how good I can be as well. I think that the way that Asbury's coach talked, their style of play is similar to my high school team from the past two years I have played. I also thought that it was definitely a recruitment camp over a skill camp. The camp allowed the players show what they could do." Bryson Dickerson
