Personal Statement

~~Dear Coach,

I am writing to express my strong interest in playing basketball.  My name is Kyle Green and I am a senior attending Frederick Douglass High School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

I was 7 years old when I got three balls for Christmas…soccer ball, football and basketball.  I was so amazed with them all especially the basketball.  I was so excited about how the basketball could bounce.  I wanted more.  From that moment I feel in love with the basketball.

Because of my passion with the basketball, my parents signed me up to play with the Marlboro Boys/Girls Club when I was 8.  There my coach taught me the fundamentals of the game.  I took full advantage of everything being taught about the game.   I can’t explain it but trust me the feeling I got from playing basketball was amazing and I knew I wanted to do this forever.

I would play ABU Sports in my junior years.  My coach was Terrence Porter.  Coach Porter took me under his wing and really taught me a lot about the game.  I learned a lot but mostly the importance of being a team player.  It doesn’t matter to me how many points I get in a game, the important thing is how you play the game and learn from mistakes in the game.  I learned to play offense as well as how to attack on defense.  I’ve been told that playing defense is one of my strong points.

When I attending high school in the 9th grade I tried out for the JV and made the team.  I was a starter.  My sophomore year I tried out again and made JV.  Soon after a few games the Varsity Coach asked me to join Varsity.  It was a big step but I knew I could do it because of my passion for the game.  I was ready for the challenge.  In my junior and senior year, I also played with my school.  I was chosen by my coach Terrance Massenburg to play at the 2015 Buffalo Wild Wings Round ball Classic All-Star Showcase on March 29, 2015 in Hagerstown, Maryland.  It was an amazing experience.

Playing basketball has allowed me to interact with different people and taught me
the importance of being a team player.  I have learned how to deal with pressure.  I
feel that I am ready to make my mark on the world.

Pushing myself to excel I have noticed that the people around me pick up that
positive influence and in turn push themselves as well.  The last two sessions of
basketball has certainly paid off.  I feel better about stepping onto the court and
I am more confident.

My mom always said, son “You Reap What You So” and I so desire to make it into the NBA one day.  With hard work and staying focus I believe this will be a dream come true for me one day.

In today’s competitive marketplace you must have a degree; a high school diploma is not enough.  Attending college will be a huge step in giving me the best opportunity to become successful.  It will give me a sense of purpose.

I am sure that life will throw me some curve balls and that I will knock them out of
the park.  The next step in my life will approach quickly, and I am confident that I
am prepared for it.  With the help of my parents, friends, and mentors I have
learned to push through problems and never give up on myself.  I only hope that I
have had that same impact on other people lives as well.
