Personal Statement

My name is Caden Lewis and as of 8/10/2024, I am a Junior (Class of 2026) Varsity Basketball Player and  Muriel Battle High School in Columbia, MO (a Class 6A Missouri High School in District 7). I began playing competitive basketball in 4th grade and in recreational leagues prior to that. While I am a multi-sport athlete, basketball has always been and remains my hands down favorite. Since 4th grade, I have played year-round and continue to do so. My goal is to play basketball in college and beyond for as long as I can. I consider myself a skilled, committed, intelligent player with a desire to consistently improve and develop my game. I pride myself in being an athletic scholar and team player desiring to be coached and assist in my teammate’s success. I look forward to getting to know you and your program. Thank you in advance for your consideration of me as a potential player on your Team.

  • As of 2/2023, Caden is a long and athletic guard/forward. His size and athleticism make him an excellent defender. It gives him the ability to guard any position 1-5, but 3/4 would be the most comfortable positions for him to defend. As he continues to mature and put on some more weight, I believe he will become more aggressive physically. He doesn't shy away from contact. If the last year of watching his body fill out is any indicator, he will be able to put on plenty of weight. I can easily see him playing at 215-220 lbs once he gets a year or two in a college weight/diet program. He has a great frame and if you look at his folks, it's clear to see he has a lot of physical potential. Offensively, Caden thrives in transition. He can get out and run the floor which puts a lot of pressure on opposing teams to recover in transition. He can box out a 5, grab a board at the rim, and then lead a break himself. This puts a lot of pressure on opposing teams to sprint back with a sense of urgency on defense. He has a good sense of how the floor is opening up and what lanes are available to him and is able to put himself and his teammates in positions to be successful. He can score at all three levels on offense, which makes him a matchup problem. He is a capable 3 pt shooter off of a spot up/drifts right now. Teams are going to be forced to honor his shot, opening up the lane for his teammates. When Caden is matched up with smaller defenders, he happily takes them to the block. He is great over his left shoulder. He has great footwork with a number of counters and fakes that help him get angles and keep defenders off balance. Caden really shines in the high post. He has an excellent mid range shot, that when combined with his ability to elevate on jump shots, makes him a tough guard. He has a strong jab/shot fake game to get space. Here are some areas that Caden needs improvement on: First thing that comes to mind is his ability to sometimes press too hard in transition or on offense instead of taking what's available. He is just learning through experience as he works to implement new skills he is acquiring and adjusting to playing against more athletic/physical players that have a few years on him. His decision making will improve with experience and maturity without a doubt. A second area I feel Caden needs to continue to improve on is his ability to handle the ball against pressure from smaller guards. It isn't like he is getting the ball ripped from him but it can disrupt him to the point where he is no longer comfortable and takes him out of rhythm. All in all, Caden is a work horse. He is consistently one of my hardest workers and has a real passion for the game. Practice isn't work for him, he genuinely enjoys it. And to me that is what separates a lot of "could have beens" from the guys that reached their goals. His self-motivation and love of the game is his biggest asset. Out of all the players I am currently working with, he is one that has the most potential due to the combination of skill set and physical abilities.
