As a student athlete, I truly believe that every day is an opportunity to demonstrate my very best. Earning excellent grades in school is extremely important to me. Throughout my high school career, I have challenged myself by engaging in rigorous courses, including honors and Advanced Placement classes. I have earned straight As in all of my courses except for three Bs in Geometry Honors, Chemistry Honors, and AP Human Geography. Currently, I have an unweighted grade point average of 3.867 and a weighted grade point average of 4.317. I am in the National Honor Society and on the honor roll at school.
Basketball is a dynamic sport which motivates me to work hard and extend myself to improve. My passion for basketball stems from playing with a team that works well together and problem solves to develop and implement strategies to outsmart the opponent. It is rewarding to excel in assisting my teammates, rebounding the basketball, taking charges, diving for loose balls, and playing defense. I always try to guard the other team’s best player to challenge myself to get better and learn what I can to improve on defense. My offensive strengths in basketball are shooting, including three pointers, free throws, one-dribble pull ups off a screen, and transitioning at the elbows and each side of the extended free throw line. COVID-19 has proven to be a complex phenomenon for all students. As many of us have lost our athletic high school seasons, I continue to find ways to practice and enhance my skills by rolling my portable goal into the street and shooting 100s of shots each day. I also workout with a trainer twice a week to enhance my skills and have been able to play in some tournaments with my AAU team.
As an individual, I strive to be both compassionate and kind. Both of my parents are educators and they have instilled in me that you should always treat others the way you want to be treated. When I was in middle school on the basketball team, our team manager was a student who was in a special education classroom due to severe cognitive challenges. He was so proud to be a member of the basketball team and I was so fortunate to have him as a teammate. He taught me so much about friendship and the blessings and opportunities we have in our lives. When I transitioned to high school, I saw him on the first day of school sitting by himself in the cafeteria and we had lunch together. Every day is an opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of others. Before every game on and off the basketball court, I remind myself to always work hard and have a positive attitude. Ultimately, our actions define who we are as individuals.
