In college, I want to be the quintessential student-athlete. One that always strives to reach the perfect balance of both experiences. Use my experiences and lessons learned in the classroom out on the basketball court. And then apply the values and discipline learned on the court to my studies. I’m leaning towards focusing on Education and becoming a high school teacher and coach. That’s today’s goal. But I also aspire to take more risks during my college stint, exploring new things that may unveil something unexpected and ultimately change my life’s direction. That’s just one of the promises of college that excites me the most, the uncertainty. I hope to learn the necessary life and leadership skills that will assist me in and after school. Try to become a bigger thinker and maybe change the world for the better somehow. I want to have fun, build lifelong relationships, represent my college or university honorably and fear no challenges.
Being a good candidate for a team starts with just being a good teammate. Mastering that feat is not always as easy as it sounds and takes hard work. There are a few distinct ways in which I feel that I am a good candidate for any team, and I hope to explain them while also trying to avoid the pitfalls of those cliched, famous buzzwords. I am good at adapting to whatever role is best suited for the team. I come prepared and in-shape every day ready for the challenge ahead, whether practice or game, while playing four minutes or forty. I try to always focus on improving and am never short on effort. I hold myself accountable and work hard to never repeat a mistake, while staying positive throughout any challenging times. I strive to make teammates better and feel confident in offering constructive feedback, staying open-minded to feedback from others. I’ll do the little things away from the court to enhance my body, mind, and attitude. I will continue to expand on my strengths and improve my weaknesses. I am fully committed to my team and teammates. I bring energy, positivity, and honesty, and am coachable, unselfish, and dedicated. OK, so maybe just a few buzzwords.
I believe that everything I mentioned so far provides a good window into my character. Whether or not these traits or beliefs differentiate me from other candidates, I honestly don’t know. I do know that no one will work harder at all aspects of being a student-athlete than me, to best represent my team, my school, and my family. I like to focus on the little things and understand that doing all of the steps in a process the right way will ultimately yield the desired outcome. I am proud of what I have accomplished and who I have become thus far, but I also recognize that I still have much to learn. I can hardly wait.
