After watching my older brother go on to play college baseball, I knew I wanted to do the same thing but I want to play BASKETBALL! My brother has proven hard work pays off. And even though I've never told him, I want him to be as proud of me as I am of him.
I've been a part of great teams growing up. I've beat out more athletic players and earned starting roles on every team. At the beginning of my freshman year, I was splitting time on the freshman and JV teams. But I wasn't satisfied. I knew what my brother would do - he'd go to work. I went to the gym and practiced my ball handling and shot from all over the court even more. I focused on leaving everything I had on the floor every night at our team practices, playing smart, and doing all the little things. I worked on playing solid defense, blocking out, rebounding, taking care of the ball and making the extra pass. By the end of the season, I was a starter on JV and never came off the court. I finished the last 3 games with 15, 15, and 16 points, and 4 rebounds a game. I had to battle an ankle injury in the beginning of my sophomore year and missed the first 5 games. Once I was healthy, I earned a starting position again and had the most minutes of anyone on the team. I even got to dress varsity the last half of the season on the varsity team that had 6 seniors and won the conference championship.
My goals for this season are simple - to start for our varsity team and to be a leader on the team. I want to be the guy that's always on the court in crunch time. My travel coaches taught me to respect the game and how to play the game the right way. My high school coaches have shown me what it takes on and off the court "and when no one’s around". My parents have taught me right from wrong and how important school is. And my brother taught me what's possible. Although I am kind of quiet and laid back, I'm competitive and confident inside and I'll continue to work to get what I want -- to play college basketball for a great school!
