Sports has been my identity and my passion since my earliest memories. My dedication to being the best athlete possible drives everything I do. I apply the same dedication to my education, to my family life and to maintaining my mental and physical health.
I am the youngest of three brothers, so athletic games and games of skill have been part of my life since before I could walk. My older brothers were my first coaches. They always included me and challenged me. As the youngest and smallest in the family, I had to work extra hard and be smart to compete with them, but those early lessons started me on the right path.
I was exposed to many sports since my earliest childhood and I did them all. I enjoy all sports at a recreational level – skiing, swimming, baseball, gymnastics etc. I have competed at school and club levels in track and field, lacrosse, soccer and ice hockey. My love of all sports has made me a versatile athlete. Ice hockey was my main competitive sport until two years ago, when my preoccupation with basketball took over and I decided to make it my primary sport. I have never looked back and have devoted myself to becoming the best basketball player I can be.
My focus is to do everything I can to hone my basketball skills and to develop my mental and physical fitness to fit the optimal athletic and mental profile of an elite basketball player. At least twice a week, I train one-on-one and in a small group with a dedicated basketball skills coach. I play on two rep teams, and I also play on my school’s varsity team. I never miss a practice or a game. In game situations, I constantly strive to apply my coaches’ training and feedback to achieve game results.
In addition to formal basketball training, practices and games, I follow my own daily shooting and fitness regimen. I am dedicated and hold myself accountable to stick to my team commitments and my routine. I pay attention to my nutrition to ensure that my body gets the right fuel to perform at its peak capacity. I do not abuse my body with drugs or alcohol – my body is a temple.
To be able to dedicate so much time to basketball, I have had to be extremely disciplined about my approach to studying and school. This discipline has resulted in my steadily improving marks. I was an Ontario Scholar (80% average or higher) last year, and will be again this year. I enjoy school and my teachers and look forward to continuing my academic career in lockstep with my athletic career.
I understand that mental fitness is a very important element in an athlete’s skill set. I ensure that I get adequate sleep, and I have developed a meditation practice. Meditation has helped my performance in immeasurable ways. It helps me calm my mind, to stay in control, and to focus on whatever needs to be done. I am tough, but I cannot be provoked. I am a calming force and set a good example to my teammates.
Playing college basketball at the highest level is my goal. I want to prove what I am capable of. I want to find the right college match, and am open to all possibilities.
