As a college recruit, I have some positive characteristics that would benefit my new team. Having a curious nature, I look forward to getting as much out of my college experience as possible. I look forward to learning about a new city or town and especially becoming part of a new team. Since I began playing sports, I have been a player that likes to keep team morale up and have strive to be the best individual and team player possible. I have been on elite teams in my AAU program and I believe that’s where I have learned when to take charge and when to defer to other players. I have learned to have thick skin with some coaches and to understand the meaning of direction from the more laid back ones. My biggest struggle was when I was 15 and was put on the U18 (17-18 year old) team. I understood that it was a compliment to be trusted to play on that team, but it was a challenge to not only my skill level, but also my confidence and morale. I wasn’t used to being the player on the bench and I have to admit to not always having the best attitude. After a few tournaments, I realized that I could be the kid that just gave up or I could be the kid that stepped up and did as much as possible given the circumstances. Right away I began to get noticed and even though I wasn’t the best player on the team, I was making obvious contributions that were appreciated by scouts and my teammates. This experience taught me not only to play harder, smarter and more physically, but also to have more understanding of what players down the bench go through. It has made me a better player and teammate and those lessons are invaluable.
