NCSA Personal Statement - Dominic E. Cestero, Houston, TX ℅ 2023
Playing and competing in basketball is a great passion for me that I have done since I was six years old when I played on my first church league basketball team. I have been on great and interesting teams in high school, each of which has taught me and helped develop my skills and leadership on and off the court. My freshman year, we had a young team with a less than desirable final record, but we competed hard in every game and grew deep bonds as a squad. That year, my teammates and coaches relied on me to carry a heavy scoring, rebounding and minutes load against some of the best talent in the region and against much more experienced players. In other years, I was on more talented and older teams and had the opportunity to be in more balanced situations and contribute across the board, sometimes not necessarily being the main scoring option. Given these experiences against some of the top talent in the state, I feel I could contribute at the next level as a skilled defender, scorer, rebounder and passer who plays selflessly with teammates and is motivated by team success and making a difference on every play on offense and defense.
As the oldest in my family, I’ve always been expected to set an example for my two younger brothers. I believe that my experience as an example setter and leader for them has really transferred over to my basketball career and vice versa. Also, living in different places around Texas has helped form my ability to familiarize myself with new people and new teammates quickly.
For college, my goal is to play at a high academic school where I can maximize my skills on the court while being challenged in the classroom. I am undecided on a major, but at this point have a high interest in pre-law, business, economics, history, natural sciences and double majoring.
