Thank you so much for taking time to read my personal statement. My name is Jack Zammit and I come from the little island of Malta in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. I currently hold the position of junior guard for the Oak Hill Academy Red-team and at the age of 16, have already managed to represent my country 3 times throughout my basketball career. I have participated in the FIBA European Championships Division C, twice U16 and once U18 which I consider to be a big accomplishment , however, my ambitious nature demands that I push myself further in order to play basketball and most importantly, study at a prestigious university with the aim of being able to reach my full academic and athletic potential.
After completing my secondary school in Malta, I felt that the best way to continue improving my skills was to step out of my comfort zone and move to the US to enroll and train at one of the most renowned basketball high schools in America. I raised the funding I needed to attend Oak-Hill Accademy in Virginia, through Maltese scholarship funds, family and friends.
I was aware that I might not have had the playing time that I was used to, but my priority was and is to be able to train with the best, so that I can continue to improve. When I return to Malta, I would like to pass on all that I have learned, my experiences and my achievements, to inspire the younger generation, both on the court and beyond.
I feel I can contribute to my team, by being a very dedicated player and I am known for being a hustler on the court. Our coach emphasizes on defense and taking charges so I am becoming very good at that too. I have great on court vision and I can handle the ball well.
I feel that for a team to be successful everyone must play their role to the best of their abilities. I like to encourage everyone around me to be a better player, to help them bring up their level of play, feel better about themselves, no matter what role they play.
I make it a point to seek out and put to practice both feedback and direction from my coaches as well teachers. I believe this is an integral aspect of being able to better oneself as a player and sportsman. I strive to be a leader on and off the basketball court by maintaining good grades and upholding my relationships with others.
Apart from training with my team and studying, I am consistently seeking to improve my skills, even outside of team practice; by going to the weight-room everyday as well as practicing drills and getting shots up by myself in the morning before school and by eating healthy food. I have a good sense of humour with my friends but on the court I have a competitive edge and push myself and my teammates to be the best we can be. I hope that a further review of my profile will convince you that I am the type of player and student you want to represent your college/university
