Hey there! Let me present myself. My name is Olivier Gauthier and I’m a Canadian diver from Camo diving club for now eleven years. I have been diving for a total of twelves years and I have been on the national circuit for over 7 years. I have also been to few international competitions such in Great Britain and in the United States where I have proudly represent my country. Besides being an athlete since such a young age, I consider myself as a student first. I have been consolidating my academics with my athletic back ground for over 8 years. I know very well how to manage my time with my studies and my training since I am a student athlete since my fourth grade in elementary school. Throughout the years, I was able to reach great results in both diving and school. For me, being a student athlete is the best way of keeping a healthy lifestyle as I am not putting all my energy into one thing. I am a man of principles with well-founded values and who stay true to his words. I will never let anyone smear my name or someone else name. I believe if you don’t have anything good to say about someone, you better pass without saying anything about them. I also believe that sports are the best teachers in life . Training over twenty hours a week and integrating a normal school schedule through it all, I never had the chance to have a part-time job. I have no work experience, but here is what I have learned throughout my diving years:
I have learned hard work, commitment, loyalty. I have learned to never give up and to finish everything I have started. I have learned how to accept defeat in true sportsmanship and to win like a gentleman. I have learned to never back down to a fight, as it’s never over until it’s declared over. I learned how to earn my place and take it. I learned to listen to my coaches and not to question their will towards me. I have learned how to stand back on my feet after defeat and I to win in adversity. Diving has made the shy little kid into the man I am today and I will forever be thankful to my club for having a big part into making who I am nowadays.
In the diving community, I am considered as a diver who can always pull a wild card. Unlike most athletes, I can always make the greatest dive of the competition after missing one. After spending eight months out of the pool in the 2018-2019 season due to injuries, I was able to finish 3rd in both 3 m and 1 m at Nationals. I had missed the junior Pan Am's qualifications by only a few points. Today, I look back at that season as one of my best and as an example that hard work and commitment can truly bring you anywhere if you put your mind to it. I can easily adapt to different environments and coaches: in both competitions in Great Britain and the United States, I was trained by another coach from another club from the other side of the country. Currently, I am training at the Olympic Stadium with Diving Canada and I am a targeted athlete for the next Olympic’s. My future goals in diving is the same as it was since the beginning. I want to be the best I possibly can! Diving is my passion. I want to learn new dives, new people, new places, compete in various events and to enjoy the ride!
As for my academics, my ultimate goal is to become a corporate lawyer. My first plan is to attend a great university that will form me into the best corporate lawyer I can be and to make it all possible with my diving. For my second plan, I consider looking back to what I did wrong and get back to my first step because I don’t accept failure and I will always push until I succeed. In my family education is what’s mostly valued. My grandparents didn’t get the same chances of educating themselves like I have. And so, I find it important to invest myself into my studies since they worked very hard to make it all possible for me. Although being diagnosed with ADHD (without hyperactivity), I consider myself as a brilliant kid who always submits his work on time. I am working hard, I have good grades, I am proactive and I am not scared of asking help to my teachers and coaches when it comes to scheduling arrangement. When it comes to languages, French is my main language, I am perfectly fluent in English (my current coach Devon Butter is also coaching me in English), I can speak Spanish and I know a few words of mandarin.
