I have always known that I've wanted to play college golf. I am the youngest son out of two, and I wanted to follow in my brother’s footsteps and play on the Varsity Golf Team. I got my first set of golf clubs when I was 3 years old, and my overall goal was to outperform my brother on the golf course. Although he won’t admit it, I am well on my way to reaching my goal! To give an example, we both tried out for the golf team in 7th grade, and he did not make it until 8th grade. I, on the other hand, made the team and had many opportunities to work with other players and coaches to develop my skills. That year, I was Junior Varsity Low Medalist in the Madison County High School Golf Tournament. However, this accomplishment was not met without obstacles. I tied with another player and had a five-hole playoff on #10 par 3 at Huntsville Country Club. I remember hitting the green in regulation five times in a row before winning. Those experiences helped shape me to become the person, student, and athlete I am today.
Moreover, since the 7th grade, I have played high school golf, tennis and trumpet in band. In 9th grade, I narrowed my focus to one sport, golf, while still keeping my grades up and participating in marching band. This allows me to stay versatile, organize my priorities, and to practice multitasking. My academic goals for high school are to do my very best in the classroom and graduate with honors. While continuing to take on new challenges, I continuously reflect on my favorite scripture, which is written on my golf shoe to remind me that: “I can do all things through Christ which strentheneth me.” (Philippians 4:13)
Whether it’s playing with my older brother, or in the middle of one of my most challenging matches, I have learned to keep my cool under pressure. I think that is one of my biggest attributes. Winning the Southeastern Collegiate Golf Tour (SECGT) Danielle Naes Collegiate Players Championship at Cypress Lakes Country Club in Muscle Shoals, Alabama this year was one of my most treasured accomplishments. This win validated for me, now more than ever, how important attitude is in the game of golf. Even though I am very competetive, I believe that character matters most. I hope to be part of a college team that will encourage my continued growth and allow me to be an asset through my competitive spirit and willingness to learn. I hope you will let me show you how my talents, teamwork skills, and leadership can strengthen your team.
