Darren Chiu '21 Recruiting Profile

My name is Darren Chiu and I am a 2021 graduate of Oak Park High School in California.

I have started playing golf ever since I was around 7 years old. However, I quickly lost interest. I jumped around from basketball to tennis, but eventually came back to play golf when I turned 12.  My family have been super supportive of my athletic career and continue to give endless support when I need it. I love the game of golf because it brings new challenges every day.  You never know what is going to be thrown in your face, so you always have to be prepared. Everyday, you play a different course. There is not 2 courses in the world that are the same; this is what makes golf so fun and challenging.

In school, I have always been a decent student. I am looking for a college that can support both my academic need and my athletic needs. I would like to pursue business as my major in college and I can see how golf and today's business world go hand in hand. 

Regarding my goal of playing golf at a collegiate level, I am looking for a school that is the perfect fit for me. I am looking for qualities such as coaches, teacher to student ratio, athletic history, and the teammates, I'll be playing with for the next 4 years. I am hoping to find a school that supports both my athletic and academic needs.

Academically, I have always been a good student. In my freshman year, I had a 3.8 GPA in the first semester.  My first semester of sophomore year I received a 3.7 GPA

Outside of school, I have volunteered numerous hours at Westlake Library and Agoura hills Library by helping them clean their bookshelves, computers, and keep records of books. I hope that I have made a positive contribution and impacted the atmosphere of these libraries. 

My golf coach, Chris Mayson, has been extremely helpful in my game. He has taught me many tricks about golf in few lessons. My game has improved drastically. He has taught me how to manage my game when it isn't at its best level, and has shown me how to play my pattern. I like to think that I am a very determined and dedicated golfer. I love the game and always love working to become better and dream of one day to be a pro golfer!
