Hi, my name is Ryder Obrero-Ueno and I attend Island Pacific Academy, class of 2026. My current cum GPA is 3.31 and I have been a part of the ILH Varsity golf team since Freshman year. My current GHIN is .9 and I am a member of HSJGA, HSGA, USGA & OJGA. I enjoy gaming, surfing, ice skating, watching Anime and spending time with my family when I am not in school, studying, golfing or training. I also referee soccer games to make extra money on the weekends.
When I participated in my first tournament as a Freshman High school, I was nervous and didn’t feel ready or prepared. My family and friends supported me and believed in my talent, saying I had all the potential in the world. However, I didn’t think that was enough; I wanted to improve and be the best. So, I took my training to the next level and practiced harder every day, no matter what. My goal was to win.
Throughout my years of golf, I’ve played many tournaments and have gotten close to winning, but I have yet to claim a win since my freshman year. I have been working hard every day to improve my game so that I will be prepared for the next tournament. In my Sophomore year, my average was a 75.5 with my highest being a 90 and my lowest being a 72. I was disappointed with the outcome of the ILH Semi-Finals. I wasn’t able to qualify because I shot a 90. I put too much pressure on myself and was overthinking, which caused me to make many mistakes during that round. Now, during my Junior year, I was able to make a significant improvement throughout my season with an average of 74, with my highest being an 84 and my lowest being a 71.
None of this would be possible if it were not for my amazing parents and family, who constantly pushed me to practice and improve myself. Additionally, I would not be here if it were not for my personal Coach, Kellen Asao, who helped to improve my game significantly, teaching me better course management, swing drills, and improved my golf swing.
Outside of golf, I love to hang out with friends and make new friends while I'm at it. I love to make others laugh, so that we can create awesome memories for us to look back at in the future.
As an athlete, I always try to take the initiative to strive to be the best on and off the course. I always try to help my teammates whenever they ask for it. I hope to be a good role model for the JV and Intermediate golfers.
My goal is to play college golf at a high level while continuing to grow academically and mentally. I am excited to bring my dedication, work ethic, and passion to a program that values hard work and team work. I believe that my experiences–both the challenges I’ve faced and the relationships I’ve established–will allow me to make a meaningful impact on and off the course.
