Hello, my name is Zachary Burgess. My junior year will start in August. All of my classes are considered honors and I am taking 1 AP class. I was identified as gifted by the Otis Lennon assessment through Northwestern University. My sophomore year ended with a GPA of 3.4. I taught myself to play piano and guitar. I also sculptured a carousel horse and had never taken an art class. I like to play music, do art and play other sports.
I qualified on my own to play in the 3A state tournament knowing it was going to pour rain. It was 50 degrees and very windy then after we started our 12th hole play was suspended. I was in 9th place after 11 holes at 6 over. We went back on Wednesday and I was in a 3 man playoff for 7, 8 or 9 and was only sophomore and one of boys was 3A State Champion last year. After 3 holes I won the playoff. I took 7th place out of 119 boys. I shot a 79. 76 was the winner. I was also named All State Honorable Mention. I grew a lot by playing in the playoff against seniors and playing under pressure. It was so much fun and I gained the confidence I need to move forward
I played in 3 two day events before we left for vacation in Florida. I am working with my coach and a swing change which was probably not smart but he said I have to trust the process and myself. My progress is doing good. I also re-shafted my irons and am hitting those really good. I went from a regular shaft to an extra stiff heavier shaft. So I hope that is a game changer for me.
I look forward continuing this process in order to find a great school and play on a great golf team and felt that I finished my high school season well and will only continue to improve.
