Personal Statement

Hello My name is Ryan Schwaner I am a Senior at St. Pius High School. My current handicap is .6 and I am continuing to work hard at improving it. I played baseball my whole life and in high school from 9-10th grade but as a freshmen I tried out for the golf team and made varsity. This started the love for the game that I have and continue to have. I am a good candidate for your team due to my love for the game and the time and effort I put in at the course, working constantly to improve my short and long game. As a freshmen I averaged 92 strokes per tournament round, but as a Sophomore dropped it to 82 strokes per round and qualified for the State Tournament. This year my hard work payed off and now not only has my average dropped to a 73 but I also have been taking rounds deeper under par. This past summer I posted 6 rounds in tournament under par and fired my low of a 68. I take my athletic and academic life very seriously and have a accumulative weighted GPA of 4.25 including honors and AP classes. Thank you for looking at my profile and I hope to hear from you soon.

  • 6700 yards. The first day was nice with some light afternoon breezes. I struggled putting slightly and although I had numerous lipped birdie putts I did not get upset. I made 14 pars 1 birdie and 3 bogeys to shoot a 74 (+2). This put me in 3rd place at the end of the first day and in the final group and 5 shots back of the lead. The second day was much different than the first with temperatures below 50 degrees and a hard 20-25 MPH wind. After the front side I was only down 4 and the wind continued to howl. I played solid and after making 2 crucial birdies on the back side I was tied for the lead. With puts lipping on 15 and 16 we went into 18 tied. I stuck a 7 iron straight into the wind to 10 feet and two putted for the win. The two day total was 148 (+4) and 1st place.

  • SCJGT Championship
  • 8/05/19 to 8/06/19
  • The first day i struggled to score throughout the whole day, i had a early triple on hole five after a ball out of bounds, and grinded the rest of the day finishing at +5 77. The second day my first 5 holes were identical to the first. After a bad bounce on 5 resulting in a triple i was three over. I finished the nine that way before coming back on the second nine with a -3 33 to finish at 72 and E. This put me at 5th place for the tournament. I played great this tournament but had two bad holes which just happened to be 5 both days and it cost me.

  • Marty Sanchez SCJGT
  • 7/30/19 to 7/30/19
  • 6713 yards, the course was tight and playing extremely well, i was hitting my driver great and took advantage of some of the shorter holes and the par 5's to finish at -2 and taking first place.
  • Camp/Event
  • Tierra del Sol SCJGT
  • 7/25/19 to 7/25/19
  • 6827 This was the first time i had played the course and with ob on 17 of the 18 holes, i committed to keeping the ball in play. my 2 iron and driver were consistently putting me down the middle of the fairway and setting me up to attack pins, which continued to do throughout the round. winning the tournament at -1.

  • Albuquerque City Championship
  • 7/05/19 to 7/07/19
  • I played in the upper championship flight where those allowed to play must have a sub 2 handicap. After a two day total of 149, I made the 50% cut. Both days I played well and just had a stretch of 3 holes that cause me to be over par for that day. The final day however I can out and shot a 68 (-4) to secure low junior of the tournament, 7th place overall, and a three day total of 217 (+1).

  • Match play championship
  • 6/16/19 to 6/18/19
  • This past weekend I went through a swing change keeping the club slightly higher at the top of my swing before my 3rd “major” of the year. It was a match play tournament and in the first seeding day I struggled with my swing making adjustments throughout the round and shot an 80. I placed myself in a difficult position towards the championship. I played the number 3 seed who placed 2nd in state and was probably the most feared competitor in the field. After being down one on the front nine I attacked on the back 9 and won on he 17th green and was -1 to that point. My next two matches were versus the number two seed and finally the number one seed. i won both matches to earn the win and after +8 the first day I was +1 my next 3 matches total!
  • Camp/Event
  • District 5 Tournament
  • 5/06/19 to 5/06/19
  • 73. I was striking the ball well the whole day. I was +1 through 7 holes when I took a sloppy bogey on a par 5 and a double on the final par 4 of the nine to shoot a 40 on the front. I did not let it get to my mental game and came back with a birdie on 10. I then birdied 16 and 17 and finished the back 9 with a 33. Earning me runner up and all district honors.
  • Camp/Event
  • Metro Championship
  • 4/22/19 to 4/22/19
  • The metro championship is the biggest tournament in the city, including the top 80 high school boys from around the "metro" area, which includes both albuquerque and Rio Rancho. 77 (+5). With tucked pins and high winds, the course was playing extremely difficult for everyone. The greens were rolling at a 12 and the pins were placed on slopes, so position was everything. I putted great, the whole day, but had two 3 putts early due to ill positioning after my second shot. 2 over on the front nine in winds was a good start, but as the winds got higher, so did the majority of the fields scores. I stayed mentally tough and my short game allowed me to continue to get up and downs for par and birdie coming down the stretch. This 5th place finish named me to the All-Metro team, and helped my team secure the trophy.
  • Camp/Event
  • APS Invite
  • 4/18/19 to 4/18/19
  • (-1) 71 2nd place behind the #1 golfer in the state. Rainy and wet conditions, I birdied the first hole and stayed under par the entire round. Driver put me in position to score and when I missed the green my short game allowed me to have easy tap in par saves. While i shot under, I still left some strokes out there, but played consistent and methodical the whole day.
  • Camp/Event
  • Hope/St. Pius Invitational
  • 3/28/19 to 3/28/19
  • 75 4th place in a field of 40. Throughout the round i hit my ball off the tee very well and my approache shots were pure. I was a little tedious early in the round due to a swing change my coach had implemented the day before. I had a very consistent day with 13 pars, with half of these putts for birdie barely missing. Although these putts were not dropping for me I continued to grind and give myself opportunities.
  • Camp/Event
  • NM v CO Sandia Shootout
  • 3/23/19 to 3/24/19
  • 75 the first day with 2 stupid mistakes on the back nine that caused me to shoot 3 over instead of even. I putted well and although my irons were not on, my up and down skills were. 83 the second day, struggled putting, missed a lot of make able putts, and finished the round poorly. Overall the tournament was a big learning experience, I did not play my best, but I continued to grind and work for every shot on both days. Total 158 14th place in a field of 40
  • Camp/Event
  • Albuquerque Public School Tournament
  • 10/09/18 to 10/09/18
  • The very first hole i plugged in the bunker and started with a double. After missing a lot of make able putts early I was +6 through 12 holes, but finished at a strong -2 the last 6 holes to shoot 76 (+4) and earn 3rd place
