Hello, my name is Kerry Conner Cryer. I have always gone by my middle name “Conner.” I am 16 years old and a junior from Tipton High School, a very small school.
Throughout my early childhood I was active in many sporting events in my community and surrounding communities. At an early age I was introduced to soccer, football, basketball, baseball, and golf. This is what started my love for the game of baseball.
I continued to play all these sports, but I dedicated most of my time to baseball. I started to take personal lessons from a college coach nearby who would help me with all parts of my game. Whenever I wasn’t taking formal lessons I was practicing on my own. I believe the game of baseball has taught me responsibilities, dedication, sportsmanship, and how to handle humiliations and adversity.
I never thought I could find a game that could take my love away from baseball, but then I slowly started to fall in love with the game of golf. This started because my family consists of avid golfers who would take me to the course throughout my childhood which led me to be more competitive. Golf and baseball are played at the same time so it was really hard for me to practice golf during golf season. I would have to hurry to the golf course after baseball practice to get any practice in because of lack of daylight. It was not until my freshman year that I realized that I wanted to take golf seriously.
During my freshman year I advanced through qualifiers and regionals and became the first freshman at Tipton High School to go to state in golf. I ended up placing 14th in state with a total score of 228 over the three round tournament. This was the moment that I knew I wanted to play at the next level and dedicate all of my time into making myself better as a golfer. Unfortunately, my sophomore golf season was canceled due to COVID-19, but I realize that it didn’t affect only me, but everyone else as well.
I have since started training with a professional golf instructor from Oklahoma City. He has helped me improve my game tremendously. After working with my instructor my scoring average improved by 5 strokes. I also set my personal 18 hole best of a 63. He has also taught me how to be consistent on and off the golf course. For example, he stresses how important education is for me as a high school golfer. I know that education is a big deal, and I take pride in my education. I know that if I don’t take my education seriously my golf career could end at any second.
I hope this information provides coaches a better understanding of me, and I look forward to being in contact with those coaches.
