My goals for college are to both improve academically and athletically, and to contribute in some way to my community. I became interested in golf as a little kid as I watched my older brother and my dad play for fun. When I won my first tournament in middle school, I felt a sense of accomplishment because I had been practicing hard and felt that my hard work had paid off. My parents, family, and church community have helped shape who I am today. Both of my parents came from families with very little formal education, but they had a strong faith and work ethic. They taught me that having a good attitude, working hard, commitment, and prayer will lead me down a good path.
I believe that I can be a strong member of a college golf team because I have the character traits important to be a good golfer - patience, determination, honesty, and persistence. I have a passion for golf, I'm always willing to work hard, and I like working with coaches to improve my game. I work well with a team, while also understanding what I need to do as an individual to be a good team member. I know that with practice and coaching, I will improve my game. As a Freshman, I was shooting in the high 90’s – 100's. Since then, my best score has been 74, and I'm consistently shooting in the mid to high 70's. I know I have the potential to improve.
I enjoy the challenges presented by playing golf. With other sports, environments are controlled, whereas in golf every course is different. Each course presents different environments and obstacles, which makes golf challenging and enjoyable for me. While I played basketball, baseball, football, and golf in middle school, I made the decision to focus on just golf in high school, and I have no regrets. Golf is my lifelong sport.
While my parents pushed me to work hard in my high school classes, I didn't always follow their advice - and I wish I had! I took challenging classes, but I always felt I didn't have to study that much, when I should have studied more. My personal goals for high school were to graduate in the top 10 percent of my class, while learning good study skills to prepare for college. I’m not likely to graduate in the top 10 percent, but I do believe I’m improving my study skills now and believe that I will excel in college, mainly because I’ll be on my own, and want it for myself, instead of doing it for my parents.
I've worked at a food truck on an as needed basis over the last year, while also working for my parents' business so I could participate in golf tournaments throughout the year, because I wanted to improve my game. I believe my skills, my willingness to hard work and determination to succeed on the golf course and in the classroom make me a great candidate for a college golf team. I look forward to playing college golf and would appreciate your consideration.
