In Canada, “Hockey is Life.” As a Canadian born to a collegiate hockey playing father, I think I learned to skate a day after I mastered walking. Although I only started playing hockey when I was 6 years old, my real passion and dedication to the game only began to flourish when my family moved to New Jersey when I was 12. I attribute this to the frequency and intensity of competitive sport in the USA, the on-ice friendships that I have developed with fellow players, and my new found desire to be a team leader. Today, my inner Canadian has been awakened and nothing would be more fulfilling than being able to play college level hockey while pursuing academic success and achievement.
I model my play after New York Rangers defenseman Adam Fox. I am a strong skating defenseman who moves and shoots the puck well. I am very conscientious defensively but love to rush the puck, join the rush, and hold the zone in an effort to contribute to the offense. I have a solid hockey IQ and work continuously throughout the year to enhance my skill.
In my Freshman year of high school I made the Varsity team and was awarded the “Rookie of the Year.” I was also named amongst the top Freshman and Sophomore hockey players in the state by NJ.com. On top of that, I have taken the role of video editor for the Varsity team, analyzing opposing teams game tape and creating highlight videos of our games to rally school spirit and attract spectators.
In club hockey, I have held the honor of being named team Captain by my peers and coaches. Through this experience, I learned the importance of motivating and supporting players and became involved in regularly volunteering to help coach youth hockey clinics. I really enjoy providing these younger players with the support they need to reach their full potential, instilling good sportsmanship and getting the same enjoyment out of the game as I do.
Hockey is not everything though. Student Athletes are students first. My Freshman year cumulative GPA was 3.75 and that number is steadily rising in my Sophomore year. I enjoy learning and constructing things, and I speak French fluently. I have broken both of my wrists playing hockey, and if I learned anything in the recovery time, it is that there is life beyond the ice but doing something that combines passions is important. Once my competitive playing days are done, I aspire to be an Orthopedic surgeon with a sports medicine focus in an effort to affiliate myself with professional athletes. Hockey has shaped me into the person I am today and has opened so many doors for me. Hopefully some of the future doors will be on the ice at a college arena and to an operating room at a top hospital.
