Growing up playing hockey in the South, I have learned a lot about myself. I started playing when I was nine, without family or friends that had experience with hockey, and in a place where basketball is clearly the most popular sport for kids. My parents were supportive, but couldn’t skate or help me the way my friends’ parents who played hockey could. I quickly learned that it was all up to me to succeed on the ice.
Through hockey, I have become a better person. Hockey has given me confidence, the ability to lead, and an understanding of what it takes to commit and work hard to succeed. These traits have made me easy to coach, a positive influence on teams, and able to persevere through the hard times. Last year, I reached outside my comfort zone to play for a AA team after only playing for a local A/B team the first few years, during my first year transitioning into high school. I overcame these obstacles by finishing with a 4.0 GPA and helping my team win the state tournament and go on to Nationals. I love this game and what it has done for me.
