Hello, my name is Luke Abbott. I am in the 2023 graduating class at Yankton High School located in Yankton, South Dakota. I believe I would be a great asset to any college hockey program, both athletically and academically.
I began playing hockey when I was five years old. It has always been my favorite sport. My favorite part of the game is being part of a team. I have made many lifelong friends through hockey. My greatest strengths as a player are my versatility and my hockey sense. For most of my career, through peewees, bantams, and first-year varsity I was a defenseman, as I was one of the stronger skaters on my team. As a sophomore, my coach felt that we needed more power on offense and moved me to wing halfway through the season. For the rest of the season, I averaged over a point per game and became one of the leading scorers on the team. I was on the power play and penalty kill consistently throughout the season. This year I was honored to be named captain of our varsity team. My goals for the remainder of my high school career include helping my team qualify for the state tournament, developing as an individual, and preparing for college.
Academics have always been extremely important to me. I consider myself a very strong student, and I am currently enrolled in three advanced classes as a sophomore. These include Honors Algebra II as well as Chemistry I and Spanish III. I will also be taking three advanced classes as a junior, including AP Spanish, AP biology, and Pre-calculus & Trigonometry. I have a 4.0-grade point average, and I am currently ranked number 1 out of 237 students in my class academically. I plan on majoring in pre-med and attending medical school at the end of my college career. My goal is to play hockey at the highest level possible for a school with a strong academic background. I have done a good job of balancing school, hockey, and work thus far. This will serve me well as I take the next step in my career.
I feel well prepared to balance the rigors of a busy academic schedule with the demands of college hockey.
