I started playing lacrosse in 6th grade because my brothers friends played and I immediately developed an interest in the game. My first season I floated around in terms of positions but I tried goalie once and I never looked back. I played for my local club team the Chico Rebels and from there I heard about travel lacrosse. I knew travel sports were a big thing because I had played basketball for my whole life so when I heard ADVNC Sacramento was holding tryouts I decided to go. I played for ADVNC for one year then I switched to ACES. The switch to ACES helped me develop more as a goalie than I could have imagined. I didn’t know that goalies had specific drills to sharpen skills until I went to ACES.
When High School came around, my school did not field a team. For the first two years of high school I was not able to play at a competitive high school level which made me feel like I was at a disadvantage. Rather than quitting or not trying as hard, I decided to work harder to be able to compete against top level players when I encountered them in travel tournaments. Long drives to Sacramento and San Francisco just for practice and shooting sessions. I wanted to be a quality player and in order to do that I had to travel to find better players to play with and against. After my first two years at Chico High, I realized I was struggling academically and that I was not going to get the looks I wanted without playing high school lacrosse at a high level. This is what pushed me to leave home and transfer to Jesuit High School. The transfer aided me academically and offered me training opportunities that I had never even thought of. A mix of transfer rules as well as COVID prevented me from participating in any part of the regular season but I was able to play in a scrimmage against a nationally recognized team in Saint Ignatius(SF). After the game even though we lost, I had no reason to be upset. I was the transfer from a small city competing against a top 20 team and I had 18 saves. This was a big deal to me because many people doubted the fact that I could play against top tier teams because I never had the same training opportunities as other players. I put those doubts aside and bet on myself to put the work in and over time I knew something would happen.
As a player I am fearless in stressful situations. I explode aggressively to the ball on outside shots and I am able to read shooters in close because of my fast hands and quick first step. I can get the ball into a strong ball carriers stick on clears with a lob or dart and if all options are closed I have no problem running out to create space for an easy pass off the ride picking me up.
Thank you for you time,
Segen Chambers
