As a kid, my parents signed me up for soccer. I played all through elementary school, and I was pretty good. I always made the “A team” for my town’s travel team and enjoyed playing, but I wasn’t passionate about soccer. In 5thgrade, I was ready for a change. My uncle played lacrosse in high school and club lacrosse in college. He suggested I give lacrosse a try. I wasn’t certain so during the spring of 5thgrade I tried both baseball and lacrosse. It didn’t take long for me to realize that lacrosse was where my heart was. I loved the speed, the contact and the competitive nature of the sport. And I’ve never looked back.
When I was 7, my family lost our home after an electrical fire. We were home and sleeping but managed to get out without injury. The biggest lesson I learned is that life isn’t about the stuff. It’s about how your lead your life and the people in it. At the time, it was very difficult. But when I look back, I don’t think about what I lost. I think about the people who helped us and what I gained. I gained an appreciation for life and how I want to live it. Lacrosse allows me to do that. I love being a part of a team and supporting our common goal. As a defender, I’m not always in the spotlight. But I like that aspect of defense – I fight to support my team by creating mistakes and giving them an opportunity to score.
I’m committed to playing lacrosse in college. And I’ll keep working hard to make sure that my dream becomes a reality.
