I'm ready to compete in lacrosse at the highest level, not because of my success, but because I have overcome failure. When I started high school, I devalued my education. As my sophomore grades fell, and my behavior spiraled even more precipitously, my father, an active climber and Naval Officer, took me out of school to the mountains. It was winter, so we packed up the cold weather gear from his Himalayan and Mt. Kilimanjaro treks. We camped next to a snow-banked river. We hiked, we fished, we talked. There was no mention of grades or college plans. Instead, we shared stories of his climbing and my adventures with Outward Bound California the previous year. There were no expectations, no judgements, and no lectures. Just open dialogue about anything: a brilliant reset. Sitting by a fire in freezing weather, I realized that my dad was committed to my personal growth. When we returned from the mountains, I had a new outlook. I was going to reset, repeat 10th grade, and rebound from my mistakes in a positive trajectory. I decided to live an extraordinary life of service and gratitude. I was named 1st Team All-Conference this year and 2nd Team All-State, and I led my team in goals and assists. I'm ready to bring the fight and help our team win championships!
