Let me just start off with saying, rowing as a sport is not for the weak. I started rowing in middle school and soon found that I loved the peace and humbleness the water gives me after a crazy day at school.
The 8th grade was not technical by all means but when we were on the water it felt like nothing I had experienced. The feeling of silence and eeriness mixed together with a stellar workout was something I'd never experienced before.
As I moved on to novice year many of my fellow middle school squad started to move on from the sport as it now demanded 6 days a week training. I could not even fathom quitting even though I commute an hour plus each way. As you can imagine with the two and a half hour practices and 2 plus hours of commute it leaves me very little time to focus on my school work and extra curriculars. This time frame has taught me how to be very organized and efficient with my studies, staying up late and getting up earlier than usual. Rowing six days a week also holds me back from other school activities like joining clubs. I learned to get around that by joining teens volunteering in action (TVIA) an outside of school club where we boys volunteer and help out our community with a variety of different projects and non profit organizations. I have to say this keeps me grounded as I work closely with the homeless and disabled people.
I have many other interests but at the top is traveling the world. I have traveled to 48 countries and wow what an eye opener that was. To compare how I live to others in the world is humbling and makes me appreciate what I have.
My other passion is deep sea fishing. We go fishing every chance we get. My father has made a point to take me every summer for a 5 day deep sea fishing trip into Mexican waters. We catch yellowtail, bluefin, tuna and many other great eats for the family. One trip I caught 90 pound bluefin. My mom made fantastic poke and ceviche. Lastly, I enjoy hanging with my friends where they all wait for me to join them on Friday and Saturday nights.
Rowing has given me sore and achey muscles, calloused hands and very little time for anything else, but it also gives me an amazing workout ethic and a brotherhood with my crew. For that reason I could never give up rowing. I would not be Aiden Linson without rowing. When I think of who am I, I am a family person, I am a top lightweight rower, fisherman with lots of friends who wants to grow up to be a businessman who will continue to help others and travel the world for the rest of my life.
