  • This year at our National Regatta we were faced with a new format. This new format got rid of the semi-final races that qualified crews for the finals races, and instead, put far more emphasis on time trial which would decide finals qualifications. We had a good time trial which qualified us into the A final, where we were racing against crews we had faced all season. Going into the final it was set to be close, with the final four crews placing within 3 seconds of each other proving that there would be a fight for 3rd place in the 6-boat race. We also faced an incident during this regatta, as half an hour prior to boating our crew's coach Mr Morgan, was knocked off his bike while following a race and had to leave for the hospital to treat the damage done to his wrist. Despite this setback, our crew was focused on the race, as the boat was eerily silent at the start line and as we progressed through our warmup. We sent it out of the blocks hard and as we approached the 1.3km mark we realized we had gone through our crew's collective energy, we started to get dropped from the pack and started to get demoralized from the lack of atmosphere due to this. We ended the race happy about the setbacks we had overcome, and pleased about our time trial result. 6th Place

  • We worked on moving the boat through acceleration at the finish, through the establishment of a new call "boatbreaker", this call pushed for us to hang off our handle to get suspension through the stroke, as well as too hold that connection around the pin. We further worked on posture in the boat by feeling the activation of our lower backs, glutes and core at the finish. Due to this being pre-summer racing season we also worked on higher-rate pieces, through half-slide rate build-ups and the creation of our racing start. This all culminated with a 2k downstream on the last day where we managed a 5:50 in a fast stream and a slight tailwind with my crew being 25 seconds off our Senior 1st VIII. Due to constraints in the size of the Hostel we were staying in I was unable to reside with my crew, however, I organized for myself to arrive before breakfast at 7:30am, and leave after dinner at 9:30pm, since I lived around 50 minutes away from the location.

  • A day of four races in two different categories. This was an enjoyable day, as we raced in a small knock-out regatta favored by many a school and university crew alike. Our first race of the day was against our long-term rivals Radley College in the J15 2nd VIII category, it was a close race with both crews pushing on from each other until we secured a seat over Radley under the bridge at 550m to go, we then expedited this lead through our sprint sequence as we finished 1 1/4 Lengths up over a 1.2km Course. Our next race was in the Open Category, as we faced up against Wolfson College (A Post-Graduate College of Oxford University) who were in fact also coached by Rory Copus, our Senior 1st VIII coach at the time. We understandably lost to the team generally made of older university students by 3 1/3 Lengths. We then went on to progress in our J15 category beating Bedford School by a length pushing us into the finals. In our final we gave it our all but couldn't quite make up the seats lost under the bridge, leading us into second place in our division by half a length.
