Personal Statement
I have enjoyed rowing for almost six years now, but it was last year that saw me improve the most. Coming into last season, things were looking difficult. Not only would I be competing against athletes a year older than me, but also much heavier, and after five years of predominantly sculling, I found myself rowing in a pair. Winter training was a true test of my motivation and commitment to the sport. Many events were canceled due to weather conditions so my first race wasn’t until the summer. Coming sixth in the country in Championship Pairs as the National Schools Regatta came as quite a surprise, especially since it was our first race together. As lightweights, beating significantly larger athletes from some of the top rowing schools in the country was even more of a bonus. Moving forward from this, I went on to qualify for the Fawley Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta in a crew that had never rowed together before the time trial. The best part of the season and highlight of my rowing career was coming third in the British Junior Rowing Championships, as the lightest crew in both the A and B finals.
This season, I am looking to step my rowing up another level. I have been selected as Junior Captain which has allowed me to share my motivation and experience with the other athletes at my club. Taking on this role has strongly benefitted my leadership skills. The remainder of my career as a junior athlete is very exciting, but I am really looking forward to finding a university where I can not only further enhance myself academically, but thrive as an athlete.
