Personal Statement

Hello, my name is Abram Burton, and I would like to express my gratitude for taking the time to review my personal statement and profile. I am nearly 15 years old and reside in New Market, Alabama. Currently, I am an eighth grader at Valley Fellowship Christian Academy, where I have been enrolled since the fourth grade. Before this, I attended public schools in Prince George, Virginia, Fort Rucker, Alabama, and Fort Hood, Texas. Among all these locations, I have found the Huntsville area to be the most enjoyable, as I have lived here the longest, formed meaningful friendships, and developed a strong connection to my community.  I am the middle child in a family of three boys, with my parents, Terry and Natalie Burton, both being military veterans. My father recently retired from the Army after three decades of service and has consistently exemplified the Army Values: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. Growing up as a military child has provided me with invaluable lessons in discipline, responsibility, and resilience. My mother, a registered nurse with a Hispanic background, has instilled in me the importance of kindness and finding joy in my pursuits. These values have shaped my character, and I believe they will enable me to thrive in both college, athletics, and life's challenges.

Training

  • Intermediate
  • 1 year
  • The Intermediate Phase will build upon the skills that Abram has acquired in the Beginner Phase and will introduce concepts related to speed, agility, and coordination. Throughout this phase, students will achieve proficiency in a minimum of 4-5 techniques that they will master independently. By integrating skill development with speed and agility training, students will perform at a faster pace and learn to manage their speed effectively to prompt defenders to commit.
  • Beginner
  • 1 year
  • The Beginner Phase consists of an introductory focus on skill development, highlighting the importance of proper technique, body positioning, and ball control. Abram successfully acquired fundamental skills by utilizing various parts of his foot and executing touches on the ball to outmaneuver a defender in one-on-one scenarios.
  • Advanced
  • 2 years
  • Abram is currently engaged in the Advanced Phase of his training, a critical stage that emphasizes the execution of a diverse array of combinations. During this phase, the tempo of play has significantly increased, necessitating a greater focus on the nuances of the initial touch and body language. These elements are crucial, as they can greatly influence how defenders respond during gameplay. A well-executed first touch can create space and opportunities, while confident body language can intimidate or mislead opponents, thereby affecting their defensive strategies. To enhance these skills, training sessions are now meticulously structured around small-sided games. This format allows participants to engage in dynamic 2v2 and 3v3 situations, which are particularly effective for honing individual skills and fostering teamwork. In these smaller matchups, players like Abram can practice their decision-making under pressure, improve their ability to read the game, and refine their technical skills in a more intimate setting. The close quarters of small-sided games encourage quick thinking and adaptability, as players must constantly adjust to the movements of their teammates and opponents.
