I am Oscar Cortes, and when I play soccer, I do it not only for myself but also for my family, who have made many sacrifices to help me. My mother, Ruperta, a strong Mexican immigrant who arrived in the U.S. with nothing, had to work multiple jobs to support my soccer dreams and education after my father was deported and our home was foreclosed during my upbringing in a difficult environment. My two eldest sisters, Diana and Lizzy, were my main motivators, assisting me with homework and standing in as goalkeepers for me to practice my shooting skills. During times when my mother was unable to drive me to practices or games, my sisters and I would frequently walk in the scorching heat or use public transportation in order for me to continue following my passion.
Soccer is my passion and motivates me to wake up every day with determination. I have been committed to the sport since the age of six, consistently aiming to be the earliest at practice and the latest to depart, assisting my coaches with any necessary tasks. I motivate my teammates and younger peers to excel in both sports and academics, encouraging them to go the extra mile because it can truly impact their performance.
Being a first-generation student, I am committed to starting a tradition of academic achievement and excelling in soccer at the highest level of the sport. Motivated by my passion for the game and the unwavering backing of my family, I aim to pay tribute to their efforts, compete with passion, and motivate others to conquer obstacles and pursue their aspirations.
