Luke Cumming '23 Recruiting Profile

My name is Luke Cumming, and I am currently a Senior at Crean Lutheran High School in Irvine, California.  I wanted to share about my life as a soccer player, my involvement in high school, things I enjoy outside of school, and why I want to play soccer in college.

Soccer has always been a big part of my family life. I am the middle child of three children, and we all play soccer. I started playing soccer when I was five years old. In fourth grade, I transitioned to a club team and have been on the same team ever since. I have always been a starter, and most of the time, I play center midfield. For years my weekends have been filled with soccer games and trips traveling to different cities and states. I have enjoyed playing and spending time with my family and team.  

The transition to high school soccer was a great experience. As a freshman, I played on the junior varsity team and received the most valuable player award at the end of the year, and now I play on the varsity team. 

Sports are fun, but academics are essential. I currently have a 4.38 GPA and have received the Scholar-Athlete Award every year of high school so far, and received special recognition for having a GPA over 4.0. I am also involved in student leadership. For the past four years, I have been a Student Ambassador, which involves volunteering to help at school events and showing potential students around my school.

I enjoy activities outside of soccer. I play the piano and guitar on the Crean Lutheran worship band and for my youth group at church.  I played on Crean’s lacrosse team my sophomore year and enjoyed playing a second sport. Outside of school, I enjoy surfing, mountain biking, and snowboarding. My Christian faith is also an important part of my life that gives me direction, focus, and hope. 

My older sister plays soccer at The Master’s University. I asked her why she wanted to play soccer in college, and she told me that she was not ready to hang up her cleats. The same goes for me. I have spent most of my life playing this wonderful sport, and now I am ready to play on a much larger stage at college.  As for where I want to play, my focus is first choosing the right school that is a good fit for me.  Wherever I go, I am committed to working hard, maintaining a good attitude, and being teachable.
