Personal Statement

Hi, my name is Leo Brown and I come from a small low-income, rural community, in Clearlake California. Growing up here has made me realize that I need to push twice as hard than many athletes who have opportunities surrounding them in their nearby neighborhood and community. For instance, one of many things I had to overcome was the lack of coaches for soccer. My sophomore year we had 3 step-ins to keep the sport running. Jr year was cancelled due to COVID-19. For my senior soccer season, we initially had no coach at all. To overcome this challenge, I asked a teacher of mine who knew nothing about the sport to simply allow the sport to continue for the year. I took initiative and essentially became the coach in his place to satisfy the lack of knowledge from my coach. I would research drills I could practice with my team, coordinated practices and even helped prepare and ready the pitch for games. Being established as a leader for my team, I was able to also construct a firm bond with my teammates, full of respect where we were able to communicate and strengthen as a team. I am a 4.0+ student enrolled in college courses and AP classes who is not only dedicated in academics but is passionate about soccer. I spend many hours in the gym and on the field practicing and perfecting my craft. I want to transfer my love, dedication and experience of the game to accompany my journey in academics in college. I know that my hard work and positive attitude would be a great asset to both any team and any college.
