Personal Statement

My name is Shane Kann and I am currently a 16-year-old 11th grader at Vista High School in Southern California. My mom has been my biggest influence in my pursuing college soccer. She grew up in Europe playing soccer and was lucky enough to play in college. She has guided and taught me aspects of the game that have given me a unique perspective of the mental and physical game.

Two of my proudest accomplishments are making the Varsity team as a freshman and, on my club team, playing a year up and still starting. My primary position is a striker but I also have experience on the wing. I am a fast sprinter and make a lot of runs for through balls. I am able to position myself off the ball to make these runs more effective. When I play on the wing, I am able to sprint down the line, accept a pass and then cross it across the box. In addition to great ball control, these are my best attributes as a player. I work extremely hard in practice and in games and I am always working to improve all aspects of my game.

I am a strong academic student and take pride in my grades. I work hard at trying to maintain a 4.0 GPA. I like all my classes but the ones I enjoy the most are Math and my Honors World History class. I am proud that I am able to balance my schoolwork with sports and have committed myself to be the best student and athlete.

Outside of soccer and academics, I have attended a YMCA resident summer camp since I was seven years old and this year I am able to give back and be a volunteer Counselor in Training. The YMCA has instilled in me a sense of community and giving and I am looking forward to having more responsibility and experiencing new things at camp this year.  I also enjoy other sports during the break between High School Soccer and Club Soccer. I participate in a flag football league, which is really just for fun.

I am extremely excited about continuing my education and athletics in college.
