Personal Statement

My name is Mayowa Omisore, I am from Nigeria and a senior at Hyde Park Academy. It has been a while since I arrived to the United States, and things haven’t been going as expected- sure I’ve seen better days, but it’s just kind of different from what I am used to.  For example, our language and the way lessons are conducted at school are completely different. It has been a little hard fitting in since we are all of different cultures and mindsets. Things have not been going well between me and my parents ever since I was a little kid. Although I lived with both my parents but they weren’t happy, which led to my present situation in the United States.  I have no choice but to take the responsibility as a dad for my younger brother and sister.

I have only been in the United States for a year and five months and hoping to stay longer in order to further my education, with the expectation of going to college to get my Bachelor’s degree by the grace of God.  However, I believe my mum and I would have made it to a certain extent by the time I find myself in college, because I am willing to give it all it takes even though I am still at the stage of familiarizing myself with the new educational system I find myself in.

I started school six months after moving into the United States which left a scar on my education. I was sixteen when I moved into the United States, but traveling from a whole country to another to settle is not an easy task, especially when you’re not with both your parents; I had to wait for six months waiting for my mum and myself to get things back together before I can think of going back to school because it’s just the only option and I don’t have a choice, although I wanted to start school earlier, because I know its benefits but it will be a bad decision to make with my mum‘s condition. Getting a scholarship is the best opportunity I can get to further my education and make my mum proud. Although I know all I have to do is to stay focused and determined and get the best result out of everything I lay my hands on but the type of situation I am is not giving me enough opportunity to prove myself as a very serious, dedicated and responsible student.  It would be my greatest joy if this scholarship works out for me, because getting a scholarship is just like getting another chance to prove myself as a serious and dedicated student.

However, the most difficult part of my experience didn’t happen until my siblings arrived at the United States to settle with us, especially now that I am eighteen, it’s really tough. It is certain that bad relationships between parents can ruin a child’s future, but I am lucky to have received a special gift from God; a loving and caring mother.  I live alone with my brother, my sister, my mum, but not my father, and that does not stop me from doing all I have to do in school in order to graduate. Although it affected me in some other type of way, i.e I do not participate in anything that has to do with money or a long time after school event, except if it is something my mum can afford and because I have to get home early to make sure my younger brother and sister are okay, till my mum comes back at night; but there are somethings that are inevitable.

According to my teachers, to achieve success as a lot to do with hard work and commitment but as far as my knowledge is about being successful, most teachers don’t talk about what makes you want to keep being hardworking and committed.I have done a lot of thinking and experiment and I discovered that the level of hard work and commitment a person puts into something depends on their level of experience. This shows that most students don’t really care about their education because they have less experience and more options of what to do even if they fail to further their education at college, but someone like me just don’t have any options but to keep my head straight, especially when I know where I came from and what it means to be poor, trust me, I don’t need to be counseled on what to do. This brings me to the conclusion that no matter how hard it is to keep pushing, no matter how tired I am when trying, I just can’t stop even when I want to, there is no one on this earth except my mum and to talk of it what will my younger brother and sister see of me.
