My name is William Lipsius. I attend Iowa City Regina, which I have attended since before kindergarten and where I now play high school soccer. I really want to play in college, too. I am the youngest in my family and acquired my love of soccer from my older brother, Joe. I am six years younger than him and always wanted to do everything he was doing when I was young. We spent a lot of time together and I was dribbling the soccer ball almost as soon as I could walk. Joe played club soccer as well as soccer at Regina and I would go to practices with him and try to do the things that the older players were doing with the ball. The passion took. Joe taught me the rules, positioning, and how to be a team player. We watched and played soccer most of our free time. He has helped me to become a team leader, an unselfish player, and to have a strong understanding of the game. Joe also helped instill in me a shared passion for the game, which in turn has brought us closer as brothers.
Soccer has also taught me to work hard, particularly with those things that don’t come naturally to me. I’ve found this attribute to be a strength for me in the classroom as well. I have dyslexia and reading is difficult for me. It takes me extra time and I have to work harder than most to comprehend what I have read. I have academic accommodations for school that help me, but they also make me standout as different from others. But, I will not let this stop me. In part, because of my own experiences, I want to become a physical therapist. To make that possible, I have pushed myself and am taking Advanced Placement classes. I am certain that without my soccer background and the skills this has given me, I would have had a harder time coping with my disability. At this point in my life, I cannot imagine my life without soccer. In addition to the skills soccer has helped me develop, it has been a healthy outlet for my stress and frustrations. I am prepared to make this commitment and if I am able to play soccer for you, I will give you my all and never give up. I will be supportive of other players, and I will encourage them and do everything I am able to make us a better team.
