Personal Statement

Hi, I am Aidan McMulkin and I attend Northwest Guilford High School in North Carolina. I can’t remember a time when soccer hasn’t been a part of my life, from my earliest recollection, I have always been on a soccer field. I have played soccer for 12 years and the game has allowed me to travel to many different places and experience many different cultures. My coach’s have taught me many life lessons that have influenced me in many ways such as leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and decision making.

When I was in middle school, I learned how to overcome life’s adversities after breaking my foot in August of 2017 and then breaking my leg in December of 2018. These injuries helped me to realize that I can overcome any set back with perseverance and determination.

Not only do I want to excel on the soccer field, I would like to continuously push myself to perform in the classroom at the highest level during high school and college.

Aidan – Thank you for your time and efforts to come to camp. It was a pleasure meeting you and getting to evaluate your play. Strengths: Your intangible traits are good in that you carry yourself well, work tremendously hard throughout a game, and have good energy and commitment that rubs off on teammates throughout a game or session. You have good aggression on the defensive side of the ball, with an ability to regain possession and stamp your authority through your reading of the game, interceptions, and especially winning 50-50 battles and tackling. Athletically, you have good strength which shows in your aggressive defending and are reasonably quick and mobile in the midfield. In possession, you largely keep things simple and connect a good number of passes with intelligence. Areas of improvement: While you can also improve on your strengths, I would like to see you influence the game as much with the ball as you do defensively. You tend to play simple passes sideways and backwards. While this can be a smart decision at times to maintain possession and manage the game, look to have more influence by being more dynamic with the ball at the right time. Look to expand your range of passing by switching play, and looking for forward passes that break lines and get in behind the defense. Driving with the ball through midfield to pass an opponent and take him out of the game is another way to achieve this. You have good mobility so I would like to see it by carrying the ball and attacking more often. Your movement out of possession can also improve, to make you more available to receive the ball. Think about the depth, width and height that we coached during my demo session and look to find space in relationship to your teammates to have a better structure in possession to attack. You showed us at camp to be somewhat of a box-to-box midfielder. It was hard to determine if you’d fit better as a deep lying midfielder or attacking midfielder. As a deeper midfielder, tracking runners defensively, and always showing for the ball to help build up play are important. As an attacking midfielder, creativity, pressing high, forward runs and shots on goal become more of the aim. If you are going to be more of #8, spend some time specializing in training and games a little more in each of the #6 and #10 position whenever you get chance. Getting reps in both areas can help when you move back to being a #8. Lastly, can you couple your ability to regain possession with more communication to really direct your midfield unit, and even inform the forwards about their positioning to help you and your team. I hope this helps as you prepare for your season ahead. It shows good maturity to want feedback on your performance and hopefully you use it to your advantage. We would like to see you again this winter at our showcase event in Spartanburg. It is a great event full of coaches from around the region as well as a chance for us to make another assessment.
