On the soccer field, my primary position is center back. The center back position parallels my personality... it’s part of my identity, and who I am. I’m the type of person who is patient, thoughtful, and unwavering. I won’t back down from a challenge. I’m confident in my own skin... I know who I am and who I’m not.
My quiet confidence has come from many inspirations. First and foremost, my faith. I truly believe that faith can calm even the most un-nerved athlete. My family, my father who worked nights and weekends to support a young family while obtaining his professional degree. My mother, who always accredited her father and mothers’ sacrifices and support for her passion and success. My grandparents, who persevered through devastating terminal disease with grace, strength, and faith. All this taught me that believing in yourself, perseverance through sacrifice, and faith of those around you leads to success in anything you strive to achieve.
Soccer is a source of intense pride for both myself and my family. My mother and father have worked very hard to make opportunities available to me, both athletic and academic. In prior stages of my parent’s lives, both my father and my mother were NCAA athletes, division II and I respectively. They understand the struggle and success of developing top-notch athletic abilities. Their examples have inspired me both on and off the pitch. What drives me on the pitch?… faith, family, and these examples of perseverance.
I imagine my college career to be a time of individual growth. My goal is to study science and position myself for a career in engineering or biomedical technology. On the pitch, I plan to be an intelligent, confident, dynamic player and leader. I will use my technical and physical skills in combination with my servant leadership style to lead and influence the team. I will strive to be an asset to the team as both a field player and leader. Most importantly, I will always strive to conduct myself with honor and respect on and off the field, knowing that the way I carry myself reflects on the team, coaches and university. I don't know what waits for me on this path that I have chosen, or what I will eventually become. I only know that having faith, family, and perseverance will make for a wonderful adventure and success.
