I am Garrett Sutton from Houston, Texas. I played for varsity St. Pius X College Prep High School and the Houston Dynamo Youth Club Boys 01 PA team. I have been playing soccer since I was very young. I have played other sports such as basketball and American football, but I really have found my passion and focus with soccer.
Making it to my high school State championship in early 2017 as an incoming freshman, then reaching the following year in 2018 to the semifinals has been the most rewarding event in my soccer career so far with my high school team. It was not only that we made it that far in two consecutive years, but it was how it added to my personal growth as a player. It lead to me being more confident in my playing ability and me being more effective in putting my team in a position to score. I also have grown more excited about soccer as I develop more knowledge about the technical side in order to become better at playing my position. I have lettered all four years with my high school team and have served as Captain for my Junior and Senior year.
My Houston Dynamo club accomplishments have been many, but our most recent success is making it to the Nationals pre Covid. I felt that our team played really well and we were very competitive. I believe our success had been our team's efforts, but also my coach's effort. I feel that he has really helped me grow as a player in strategy and decision making.
I have never been a stranger to hard work. I have always been a consistent attendee in practices, but also active in taking responsibility in my own training off the field and during off season. When able, I train independently of my team with another trainer with the focus on strength, agility, flexibility and technical training. I feel like I always have something to work on in order to make me a better player. As a result of my efforts, my coaches have noticed and have counted on me consistently performing in either the center defensive midfield position. My soccer IQ and determination on the field are probably my most standout features.
I am looking for a program that will not only support me in my athletic career, but also offer an engineering opportunity on the academic side. I had a demanding academic high school schedule as well as an in season training and playing schedule which left me one day of rest to recoup. I believe that I have continued to grow and develop and believe I have the skill set to compete on a college team, but also the mental toughness to withstand the effort in balancing the two.
Since graduating high school I have attended one semester of college at the University of Houston majoring in Engineering. Academically, I attended classes remotely because of the COVID pandemic. I did have the opportunity to continue to play soccer on several competitive non college teams and have trained independantly in order to maintain my skill set.
