My late grandfather was my inspiration for being a swimmer. He was a retired U.S. Army Colonel, swam for the University of Puerto Rico and also competed in Senior Olympics. I remember seeing all of his swimming medals when I was younger and would ask him to tell me about how he got them. I joined the Sierra Vista Tsunami Swim Team when I was in the 4th grade and attended a Nike Sports Swim Camp in Lake Tahoe, NV in July 2014. I also enjoy traveling and exploring different cultures. I applied for and was accepted to participate in a National Geographic Student Expedition to Alaska in July 2017. The program focus included cultural studies, wildlife conservation and photography. We spent 10 days in Denali National Park and the diverse group of students came from across the country. We learned how to work together in finish our projects assigned by the group leaders. In June 2018 I spent one week at a resident swim camp at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD and returned in June 2019. I successfully completed the requirements for Administering Emergency Oxygen Waterpark Skills: Valid only with Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED conducted by American Red Cross in October 2018 and started working part-time as a Lifeguard at the Cove Aquatic Center in November 2019. I was certified as a Water Safety Instructor in June 2020 and will be able to teach Swim Lessons, Parent & Child Aquatics and Preschool Aquatics. I enjoy working with others and finding common ground in order to achieve our goals. Being a member of a team pushes me to do my best in competition and helps me interact with my peers, coaches and teachers. I often mentor the younger members of my club team who are new to the sport. I achieved USA Swimming "A" times in the 200 Free, 500 Free and 200 Back, and an "AA" time in the 100 Free during the 2019-2020 Short Course season. My career goal for after college has shifted from being a rescue swimmer for the Coast Guard or the Navy to being a Physical Therapist or Athletic Trainer. I am enrolled in the Sports Medicine program at my high school and it has become my true passion. Long course season was cancelled this summer and all fall sports at my high school are currently on hold indefinitely. I continue to swim laps at least 3 times a week and do dry land exercises in order to stay in shape & keep up my endurance. My mom has taught me to persevere through challenges and that life is about creating balance & exploring all available options. Thank you for your consideration.
